Access to the web storage (»WebDAV/WebDrive«)

Via the web storage, members of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar have the possibility to access data on the network. Within the university's network, the web storage can be used without restrictions. If you want to access the web storage from outside the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, first establish a VPN connection. For secure access from outside, we recommend using »WebDAV/WebDrive«.

Why should you use »WebDAV/WebDrive«?

The term »WebDAV« is the abbrevation for »Web-Based Distributed Authoring and Versioning«, which means »Internet-based decentralized authoring system and version control"«. Normally, Internet users have read-only access to the data on the network via the browser when they retrieve the web pages from the server. With »WebDAV«  it is possible to extend communication with a web server to include write access.
The software is licensed for use on official computers of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Use on private computers is permitted as long as the person is affiliated with Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Further information on the use of the »WebDrive« software on private computers can be found on the page »Using the software«.

Access and possibilities for use

In the web storage of the Bauhaus-Universität there are currently two areas below webspeicher.in.uni-weimar.de/fs:

  • home: here you get to your home drive via the directory of your structural unit
  • pjg: here you will find all project directories to which you have access

There are basically two approaches to use:

Operating system independent methodUsing a web browser
Operating system based methodUse of programs - so called clients –
from the operating system or other manufacturers

Both options differ in their use due to the available work options. These are limited, especially when using a web browser. The advantage of using the operating system is that you have transparent read, write and delete rights and can therefore manage and use your files better.

Limitations and known bugs

  • The storage limit in the home drive is currently limited to 10 GB per user.
  • Files larger than 4 GB cannot be copied.
  • When working with files (e.g. an MS Office file) on the network drive, you may be asked for a password. The file creation date is not taken over when copying with the Windows »WebDAV« client, but is set to the time of the copy process. This problem is fixed with the »WebDAV-Client«/»WebDrive«.
