»Shibboleth« is a distributed authentication and authorisation method for web applications and web services developed by Internet2/MACE.
The »Shibboleth« procedure requires users to authenticate once with a home institution in order to then access services or licensed content from different providers regardless of location (Single Sign-on, abbreviated SSO).
In this way, users' individual login procedures for different services are replaced by an overarching identity. »Shibboleth« thus uses the characteristics of people, such as their status as students or employees, and can take this into account when assigning access rights. Implementation of the process at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
»Shibboleth« is mainly used in the field of science and education. The procedure is used in institutions, cross-location organisations or nationwide for an entire country. Above a certain size, a so-called federation takes over the organisation and technical support. In Germany, such a federation is the DFN-AAI (Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructure Service of the DFN Verein zur Förderung eines Deutschen Forschungsnetzes e.V.).
The Bauhaus-Universität is, among other things, a member of the association Verein Deutsches Forschungsnetz (DFN) e.V.. For selected IT services, we use the procedure via DFN-AAI for authentication and authorisation. (→ Source: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shibboleth)
