Research in urban studies
This online seminar will aim at three objectives. In a regular meeting on wednesday evening, we will have the chance to discuss basic texts in urban studies which will be proliferated a week before (to be downloaded). This way, a common understanding on urban theory and research principles will be achieved. Secondly, doctorate students will have the chance to communicate their work with others and put a summary on the web in advance. Thirdly, intersting international colleagues are invited to chat with the participants online.

Paris in der bildenden Kunst
Architekturvermittlung geschieht in den meisten Fällen über Bilder – dies galt in früheren Jahrhunderten, als das Reisen noch ungleich schwieriger war als heute, in besonderem Maße. Was für uns heute die „Bauwelt“, Architekturpublikationen oder die Bildsuche in „google“, waren früher bebilderte Handschriften (Mittelalter), Drucke (seit Gutenberg) und Gemälde. Im 19. Jahrhundert kamen schließlich Fotografien hinzu, die seitdem zu den wichtigsten Informationsquellen für Architektur zählen. Im Seminar sollen verschiedene „Medien“ der Stadtdarstellung wie Veduten und Idealansichten, Stadtpläne, Historiendarstellungen, Vogelschauen, aber auch die Stadt als „Randerscheinung“ auf Gemälden, Werbeplakaten oder in Karikaturen vorgestellt werden. Hinzu kommen die unterschiedlichen Kunstgattungen wie Druckgraphik, Zeichnung, Malerei und Fotografie in ihren spezifischen Ausprägungen. Ausgehend vom aktuellen Thema des Masterstudiengangs „StadtArchitektur“ konzentriert steht die Veranstaltung – wie bereits beim Seminar „Paris im Film“ im WS 2008/09 – auf die Metropole Paris. Ziel ist es, neben den Charakteristika bestimmter Medien und Techniken auch die veränderte Sichtweise auf Architektur und damit verschiedene Formen der Inszenierung von Stadt (realistisch oder idealisiert sowie die Vorliebe für bestimmte Bauten oder Panoramen) durch die Jahrhunderte hindurch kennenzulernen. Nicht zuletzt gibt das Seminar einen knappen Abriss über die Geschichte der Bildenden Kunst vom späten Mittelalter bis zum 19. Jahrhundert.

Urban memory on the "social"
This seminar is meant to give a basic inside in theories on heritage, memory, and city in social science. A reader will be prepared in advance and the seminar will be based on a general introduction of the lecturer. The participants are asked to contribute by presenting both a general text (suggested by Frank Eckardt) and a presentation that links theoretical considerations to the subject of own research.

Information Literacy: Urban Heritage
The tutorial 'Information Literacy: Urban Heritage' is a course for PhD-students at the Institute for European Urban Studies and for all students interested in completing a PhD. The purpose of the course is to learn and practice basic skills regarding the selection, evaluation and management software. The tutorial provides an overview of the most important information sources and research strategies in the subject areas architecture and city planning, with a special focus on the newly acquired literature and journal access pertaining to urban heritage.

Researcher's Night
This is an unofficial and rather informal meeting for all those who want to do research, for example as a PhD student, and who need some opportunity to exchange. The Researcher's Night is meant to bring dedicated students and colleagues together to talk freely about the pleasures and problems of doing research. It is open to all disciplines. Anyone who wants to get feedback on this subject, work, ideas and questions is welcome to suggest presentations to the host in advance. The host will offer coffee and tea.
