The Art of Revolution

Kevin Buckland, Barcelona

“Power of people is much stronger than people in power.“ This compelling thought, put forward by Wael Ghonim, holds the promise of change. But how can public opinion be guided in the direction of sustainable social change? More to the point might be the question of how to shift revolutionary awareness from the margins of society into the mainstream. Kevin Buckland is a Barcelona-based artist and activist, as well as the “Arts Ambassador“ for the grassroots organization 350.org. He has participated in diverse actions from resistance to uprising, and employs comedy, tragedy, farce and satire in his work. Buckland has completed projects in the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, Ukraine, France, Spain, Canada, Korea, China, South Africa and Turkey. In this talk he will explore the ways in which art can help to build political awareness, as well as issues of how best to integrate art practices into large-scale campaigns.
