Entdeckungsreise in den Thüringer Wald

Acht Frauen und sieben Männer neun verschiedener Nationalitäten fachlich begleitet von Britta Trostorff, Projektleiterin für das Naturschutzgroßprojekt Bäche, Moore und Bergwiesen im Thüringer Wald bei der Naturstiftung David sowie von Sonia Fernandes, Studentin an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und Elodie Vittu, Referentin vom Institut für Europäische Urbanistik der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
»Räume in Transformation«, so heißt der Kurs, entstanden aus dem Feedback, dass eine eintägige Fachexkursion (im Rahmen Welcome Week) in den Thüringer Wald zu kurz ist. So entwickelten die beiden Dozentinnen mit ihrer langjährigen Tutorin ein Testprojekt über drei Tage. Ziel des Kurses ist es, praxisnah und partizipativ die Region zu erkunden und ihren Menschen zu begegnen. Inhaltlich geht es um Fragen der sozial-ökologischen Transformation und ihrer Bedeutung in einer von einem besonderen, wertvollen Naturraum geprägten, strukturell jedoch schwach aufgestellten Region. Im Programm werden eigene Erkundungen in Anlehnung an die Spaziergangwissenschaften von Lucius Burkhardt, ein praktischer Arbeitseinsatz und der Austausch mit den Bewohner*innen des Vessertals stehen. Eingebettet in das Biosphärenreservat Thüringer Wald wird eine naturkundliche Exkursion Einblicke in die Besonderheiten der Region geben.
»Die Ansätze der sozial-ökologischen Transformation zielen auf die Sicherung einer lebenswerten Zukunft und thematisieren dabei sowohl einen grundlegenden Wandel des Mensch-Natur-Verhältnisses als auch des gesellschaftlichen Miteinanders. Mit unserem »Crash-Kurs« im Rahmen der Bauhaus Summer School werden wir dies nicht nur theoretisch bearbeiten, sondern ein Wochenende lang gemeinsam leben«, betont Britta Trostorff.
Einen besonderen Programmpunkt wird der interkulturelle Abend am Samstag 23. August bilden. Die Kursteilnehmenden kochen Rezepte aus ihrer Heimat und werden in Mundart und musikalisch von zwei lokalen Bewohnerinnen eingeführt. Alle sind herzlich eingeladen, an diesem besonderen Abend vorbeizuschauen, Spezialitäten zu kosten und vielleicht auch das Vesserlied zu hören? Neben dem Kulturbeitrag wird auch eine Pop-up Ausstellung zu sehen sein, die am darauffolgenden Freitag in Weimar bei den Open Ateliers zum Abschluss der diesjährigen Summer School zu besichtigen ist.
Vor Ort in Vesser am 23. August oder an die Universität am 29. August sind alle Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner, Gäste und Interessierte herzlich eingeladen. Und wer dieses Jahr schon Projekte hat, kann sich auf eine Fortsetzung freuen: Auch für nächstes Jahr ist ein Aufenthalt im Thüringer Wald geplant, dieses Mal sogar eine ganze Woche lang als eigenständiger Summer-School-Fachkurs in Kooperation zwischen dem IfEU und der Naturstiftung David.

IfEU in cooperation with Naturstiftung on a 3-day exploration in a village in the Thuringian Forest during Bauhaus Summer School
From Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24, 2025, we will explore spaces in transformation in the village of Vesser in the Thuringian Forest with a diverse group from the Bauhaus Summer School.
Eight women and seven men of nine different nationalities will attend the “Crash Course” of the 2026 Summer School in the Thuringian Forest. They will be accompanied by Britta Trostorff, project manager for the large-scale nature conservation project Streams, Moors, and Mountain Meadows in the Thuringian Forest at the David Nature Foundation, Sonia Fernandes, student at the Bauhaus University Weimar, and Elodie Vittu, consultant at the Institute for European Urban Studies.
The course, entitled “Spaces in Transformation,” was developed in response to feedback that a one-day field trip (as part of Welcome Week) to the Thuringian Forest was too short. So the two lecturers and their long-time tutor developed a three-day pilot project. The aim of the course is to explore the region and its people in a practical and participatory way. The content focuses on questions of socio-ecological transformation and its significance in a region that is characterized by a special, valuable natural environment but is structurally weak. The program will include independent explorations based on Lucius Burkhardt's walking science, practical work, and exchanges with the residents of the Vesser Valley. Nestled in the Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve, a natural history excursion will provide insights into the region's unique features.
“The approaches to socio-ecological transformation aim to secure a livable future and address both a fundamental change in the relationship between humans and nature and in social coexistence. With our joint ‘crash course’ as part of the Summer School, we will not only work on this theoretically, but also live together for a weekend!” emphasizes Britta Trostorff from the David Nature Foundation.
A special highlight of the program will be the intercultural evening on Saturday, August 23. Course participants will cook recipes from their home countries and will be introduced in dialect and music by two local residents. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by on this special evening, taste specialties, and perhaps even hear the Vesserlied? In addition to the cultural contribution, there will also be a pop-up exhibition, which can be viewed the following Friday in Weimar at the Open.Atelier of the Summer School.
All residents, guests, and interested parties are cordially invited to attend in Vesser on August 24 or at the university on August 29. And those who already have projects this year can look forward to a continuation: a stay in the Thuringian Forest is also planned for next year, this time for a whole week as an independent summer school course in cooperation with IfEU and Naturstiftung David.
