Seit März 2020 bin ich Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Theorie und Geschichte der Architektur der Moderne an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Ich arbeite im erweiterten Feld von Architekturgeschichte und -theorie, Systemforschung und Entwurfsmethoden. In meiner Forschung und Lehre konzentriere ich mich auf die komplexen Zusammenhänge zwischen ökologischen Fragen und Fragen der Technik.

Ich promovierte im Bereich Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur an der Universität Hong Kong mit dem Thema Architectures of Coevolution: Second-order Cybernetics and Architectural Theories of the Environment, c.1959-2013 (2017), bei dem ich mich mit der Entstehung eines alternativen modernen ökologischen Diskurses auseinandergesetzt habe. Seitdem erweitere ich meine Forschungen zu komplexen Systemen, Ökologie und Design durch verschiedene Forschungsprojekte. Seit 2018 habe ich eine experimentelle Designpraxis gegründet, die sich mit der Frage beschäftigt, wie Designforschung dabei helfen kann, bessere Wege zu finden, mit Komplexität von Designproblemen umzugehen. Während alle Designprobleme als „bösartige Probleme“ verstanden werden, konzentriere ich mich auf Systeme, die durch strukturelle Instabilitäten gekennzeichnet sind, oder Systeme in der Krise, bei denen diese Bösartigkeit („mess“) am deutlichsten sichtbar wird. In diesem Rahmen ist „mess“ auch ein anderes Wort, um „difference“ im weiteren Sinne zu beschreiben. „Differences“ erscheinen dann als Widersprüche, Paradoxien und werden von vielen abgelehnt, die sie bei der Suche nach gestalterischen Lösungen behindern. In meiner sich entwickelnden Arbeit wird vorgeschlagen, dass ein erneuertes Verständnis von „Play“ dazu beitragen kann, um „Differences“ produktiv zu begreifen. Basierend auf der sich entwickelnden Forschung arbeite ich derzeit an einem Buch mit dem vorläufigen Titel Mess and Method. Im Jahr 2021 wurde ich von der American Society for Cybernetics mit dem Heinz von Foerster Award ausgezeichnet.

Außer in Deutschland habe ich an Forschungs- und Lehrprojekten in verschiedenen Ländern wie Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Neuseeland, der Schweiz und den Niederlanden gearbeitet. Ich bin ein externes Forschungsmitglied in der Forschungsgruppe Prototyping Social Forms am Synthesis Center Arizona State University, Fellow Member der Cybernetics Society Great Britain (CybSoc), Mitglied von Systemic Design Association (SDA), Mitglied von Cumulus Association, Mitglied von Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) und Mitglied des Editorial Board des Delft Architecture Theory Journal FOOTPRINT neben weiteren ehrenamtlichen Mitgliedschaften in Deutschland und meinem Heimatland Sri Lanka.
