Kevin B. Lee (Chicago): »Screen Transformations: Desktop Cinema and Smartphone Art«
Desktop monitors and smartphone screens are emerging as central sites for the experience and mediation of moving images, whether they be Hollywood blockbusters or avant-garde video art. In his recent video “Transformers: The Premake”, filmmaker and critic Kevin B. Lee took 355 YouTube videos from the filming of the most recent Transformers movie and created a “desktop documentary” to explore the making of the film.
Examining his work and other recent examples of desktop cinema, Lee will discuss the desktop as a new form of cinematic expression. He will also discuss his new work, examining the experience of art museums through smartphones and the possibilities of smartphone cinematography.
Kevin B. Lee is a filmmaker, critic and producer of nearly 200 video essays exploring film and media. He is Founding Editor and Chief Video Essayist at Fandor Keyframe and founding partner of dGenerate Films, a distribution company for independent Chinese cinema. He was supervising producer at Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies, and has written for The New York Times, Sight & Sound, Slate and Indiewire. He is pursuing an MFA in Film Video New Media and Animation and an MA in Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
