„Educational Idealism and Architectural Modernism"

Vortrag von Dr. Yael Allweil (Haifa) und Dr. Inbal Ben-Asher Gitler (Be’er Sheva) am 9. Oktober 2019 im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Timely Teaching“

As part of the exhibition »Timely Teaching — Educational Idealism and Architectural Modernism in Israel,« the curators Yael Allweil and Inbald Ben-Asher Gitler will talk about how modernist architecture became a main protagonist in instilling idealistic education in Mandatory Palestine and Israel. Their lecture spans the wide timeframe of architectural Modernism, demonstrating how its values were implemented through architecture for education, with different iterations in pre-state Zionist architecture and Israeli nation building. Design principles from the Bauhaus school and other European centers of Modernism were adopted: Boarding schools plastered white, traces of the Orient, as well as modular or Brutalist successors of interwar modernism – all were implemented as a broad interpretational arena for enacting new and farreaching pedagogies.

The exhibition »Timely Teaching – Educational Idealism and Architectural Modernism in Israel« (01.09.-13.10.2019) presents selected buildings from the 1920s to the 1980s, which were designed and built as part of the strive for a modern society based on the ideals of progressive eduction in Mandatory Palestine and Israel. In the year of the Bauhaus centenary, the exhibition underlines that architectural Modernism was not only interested in new formal solutions, but also in the sustainable design of democratic society.

The event will take place on October 9th, 2019 at 7.00pm in Oberlichtsaal, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Main Building.
