»Mediating Modernity across Cinema and Print«: Internationale Online-Roundtables im Rahmen der Forschungswerkstatt

Im Rahmen des Forschungswerkstatt-Projekts »From Process to Aesthetic: Recontextualizing Modernism in South Asia through Cinema, Print, and Object-Oriented Ontology« veranstaltet der Lehrstuhl für Medienphilosophie am 23.–24. April 2026 die internationale Online-Roundtable-Reihe »Mediating Modernity across Cinema and Print«.

Die zweitägige Veranstaltung dient als Plattform für einen fokussierten wissenschaftlichen Austausch und bringt internationale Forschende zusammen, die an der Schnittstelle von Medienwissenschaft, Architekturgeschichte, Filmtheorie und Printkultur arbeiten. Ziel ist es, die Rolle von Medien in der Formierung modernistischer Diskurse zu untersuchen und zu analysieren, wie Ideen des Bauhauses und der europäischen Moderne im postkolonialen Südasien durch Film, Printkultur und Designpraktiken neu kontextualisiert wurden.

Die Roundtables verstehen Film und Print als aktive Vermittlungsstrukturen in der Herausbildung von Moderne. Anhand von Fallstudien aus dem postkolonialen Südasien sowie transnationalen Netzwerken der Moderne untersuchen die Beiträge die Rolle visueller Medien in der Formierung architektonischer Diskurse, ästhetischer Kategorien und öffentlicher Imaginationen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf Prozessen der Zirkulation, Übersetzung und des disziplinären Austauschs sowie auf redaktionellen Praktiken, Montage und visueller Narration als Formen der Wissensproduktion.

Die Beiträge sind in drei miteinander verbundene Themenfelder gegliedert:

• Medieninfrastrukturen und Publikationsnetzwerke
• Filmische Ästhetik und räumliche Imagination
• Postkoloniale Neuformulierungen der Moderne

Jede Sitzung umfasst kurze Präsentationen, gefolgt von moderierten Diskussionen und einem offenen Austausch mit dem Publikum.

// “Mediating Modernity across Cinema and Print”: International Online Roundtables as Part of the Research Workshop

As part of the research workshop project »From Process to Aesthetic: Recontextualizing Modernism in South Asia through Cinema, Print, and Object-Oriented Ontology«, the Chair of Media Philosophy will organize April 2026 the international online roundtable series »Mediating Modernity across Cinema and Print«.

The two-day event serves as a platform for a focused scientific exchange and brings together international researchers who work at the interface of media studies, architectural history, film theory and print culture. The aim is to investigate the role of media in the formation of modernist discourses and to analyze how ideas of the Bauhaus and European modernism in postcolonial South Asia were re-contextualized through film, print culture and design practices.

The Roundtables understand film and print as active mediation structures in the development of modernity. Based on case studies from postcolonial South Asia as well as transnational networks of modernity, the contributions examine the role of visual media in the formation of architectural discourses, aesthetic categories and public imaginations. A special focus is on processes of circulation, translation and disciplinary exchange as well as on editorial practices, editing and visual narration as forms of knowledge production.

The contributions are divided into three interconnected topics:

• Media infrastructures and publication networks
• Cinematic aesthetics and spatial imagination
• Postcolonial reformulations of modernism

Each session includes short presentations, followed by moderated discussions and an open exchange with the audience.
