Workshop Public Strategies
Research Projects between art, science & technology
The idea behind this initiative is founded in the DFG and DAAD funded event series “Collaborative on Technology and Society”, first realized at the Bauhaus-University Weimar in 2007, followed by multiple repetitions in callaboration with UCSD. This year the focus of the three-day event will be the interface between Art, Design, Science, and Technology and thus the promotion of the existing bilateral research cooperation in civil engineering through establishment of an additional enduring interdisciplinary collaboration in the artistic and design oriented subject areas at the BUW and UCSD.
Core aim of the event is the development of multidisciplinary collaborations at the interfaces between Art, Design, Architecture, Media, and Engineering in the research and development field “Public Strategies” on the basis of existing projects. The interaction with the Public is, among others, main topic in fields of research and development of „Cultures of Design“, Public Art, Experimental Buildings and Studio Bauhaus. In disciplinary as well as transdisciplinary projects and developments the public space is subjected to both specific theoretical foundation as well as interpretation. The factor
of localization of visualization processes and communication is at the center of artistic, creative, and scientific questions. Making insights accessible and fruitful over the borders of the fields will be the factor determining the inner structure of the event.
In the process of the structural transformation of the public and the advancement of media development, space is subjected to a new understanding in the line of disintegration processes of its specific localization. Space is established in communication and requires as well as enables the public at the same time. Social sciences address the resulting developments in communication culture and social behavior. Artists, Designers, and Architects provide a major contribution through their work with the requirements of flexible space, with changing means of adopting public space, with the appropriation of real spaces by media, in the era of virtual worlds, as well as in the discourse on phenomena of the public in temporary communication spaces.
The innovative factor of methodologically unadjusted access to global phenomena lies in the opening of unexpected perspectives, which can be made productive by transdisciplinary means. The interchange with UCSD offers a culturally and socially founded, qualified extension of possible “Public Strategies” and connectivity for an advancement of existing developments. This also opens opportunities to establish innovative, bilateral research networks at the interfaces of Art, Design, Media, Architecture and Engineering.
