These questions lie at the core of Giovanni Picker's book project Urbanity Must Be Defended, which is based on sociological field research in Berlin, Rome and Bucharest. Twenty years have passed since the Institute for European Urban Studies was founded at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. At that time, the "European city" and "European urban studies" served as decidedly positive points of reference. But in view of contemporary developments and numerous strands of criticism, is it still possible to refer to the "European city" and "European urbanism" in a positive and/or productive sense? If so, what could such a reference look like? What might be understood by "European city" and "European urbanism"? And what would be the topics, as well as the prerequisites for such realignment? In this workshop scholars will provide critical interventions on these questions from feminist, post-colonial, race and post-socialist perspectives.
