Analyzing Schinkel - Schloss Glienicke

This decomposition of Schinkel’s work focusses on the landscape and so-called “Pleasureground” surrounding the Schloss Glienicke in Potsdam near Berlin. The landscape was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné following principles of English landscape design, and Schinkels architecture was designed to fit into and refine the existing landscape scheme.
The landscape is composed of numerous elements and devices designed to enrich the viewing experience of the pedestrian who walks through it. The goal in its design was to create an edifying visual experience in which objects in the landscape could be experienced in constantly changing manner. As a person moved along a path, objects would appear and disappear, would be seen from different angles, and in various combinations with other ones. Visual frames were constructed such that far and near events could be apprehended simultaneously.
Within the pleasuregrounds, direct views were often obstructed in such a way that the relatively small area was experienced as quite large, with many winding paths and a rich palate of visual experiences. This deconstruction shows some of the elements employed by Lenne and Schinkel and how they were combined to create a rich visual experience.
