Digital Discourses

Seminar im WiSe 18/19, Sigrid Leyssen

Time: Montag, 11:00 - 12:30

Venue: Bauhausstraße 11, Seminarraum 013

Description: Drawing on the example of the “Virtual Laboratory”, this seminar offers an introduction to the question of discourse analysis in the digital age. The existence and wide spread use of digital repositories such as archive.org, gallica.fr and google.books has dramatically changed the research practices of the humanities. “Discourse” is no longer an entity related to paper; rather, it is tied to digital representations of language. Is this a welcome opportunity for developing innovative research interests and research tools? Or are we witnessing the dawning of a new era, dominated by political and commercial strategies for measurement, surveillance and control in science? Against this background, the seminar will look at current discussions about the digital humanities and the digital turn in the humanities and the social sciences. The seminar is open to students from all disciplines, in particular media studies and computer science but also media art and design, media architecture, etc. It will be held in English.
