Reflecting on Practices of Exclusion, Then and Now, 25 June 2026
On June 25, at 17h, Camilla Caglioti, PhD researcher of "Madness, Media, Milieus", will take part in the roundtable discussion Reflecting on Practices of Exclusion, Then and Now at the MLAC – Museum Laboratory of Contemporary Art, Sapienza University of Rome.
The event forms part of the public programme accompanying the travelling exhibition Morire di classe. The Asylum Condition Photographed by Carla Cerati and Gianni Berengo Gardin, promoted by the Basaglia Archive.
The photographs published in Morire di classe exposed the living conditions within psychiatric institutions and contributed to the public debate that led to Italy’s Law 180 in 1978. Today, they continue to offer a vital point of departure for reflecting on contemporary practices of exclusion, control, and care.
The discussion brings the experience of psychiatric deinstitutionalisation into dialogue with present-day work in mental health, human rights advocacy, and social inclusion. Following introductory contributions from the invited speakers, the event will open into an assembly-style discussion with the audience, creating space for collective reflection and exchange.
The event will be introduced and moderated by Francesca Gallo (Sapienza University of Rome), together with MLAC fellows and interns Giacomo Liverani, Gaia Pallante, Benedetta Plevano, Federica Pontini, Giulia Topi, and Isabella Varela Puglisi.
Alongside Camilla Caglioti, speakers include Yasmine Accardo (Mem.Med Memoria Mediterranea), Graziella Bastelli (Associazione Il Grande Cocomero), and Pompeo Martelli (Museo Laboratorio della Mente).
