Thesis Topic - Mathiwos Wondu Foundation

In this thesis you develop a rule-set for the volumetric design of the Mathiwos Wondu Foundation in Addis Ababa

The Mathiwos Wondu Foundation (MWF) is a non-profit, non-governmental charity organization in Ethiopia focused on fighting cancer and other non-communicable diseases. It works to raise public awareness, provide education on cancer prevention and early detection, and support patients and caregivers through various programs. The foundation supports cancer patients with psychosocial assistance, transportation, accommodation, food, and help with diagnostic and treatment costs. It primarily supports children and their parents, especially those with limited access to care.

Recently, MWF acquired a 10,000 m² plot in Addis Ababa to create a new home for the foundation. The planned facility will include clinics, offices, and spaces for families, who often travel long distances from rural areas of Ethiopia for long-term treatment (often lasting several years). At this very early planning stage, a flexible model is needed to organize buildings on the site and establish rules to ensure a healthy environment for patients. Therefore, a parametric model should be created to allocate the required floor areas, ensure high-quality semi-public spaces for recreation and work, and provide sufficient views of greenery to support the healing process.
