Riga. Design in Urbanism. The Big Reset on Neighbourhood Design
The fourth edition of the European summer school will proceed with the on-going debate on the topic of neighbourhood design. After the highly successful start in Amsterdam, the fruitful session in Istanbul and the multilayered program last year in Porto, the new edition will take place in Riga. The ten-day European Intensive Program is composed of inspiring lectures and excursions, intensive design workshops and critical debates. The challenging program particularly investigates the role of urban planners and designers in creating attractive and productive neighbourhoods. Starting from the notion of ‘Neighbourhoods as Laboratories between Social and Design Concepts’, the international student teams are invited to reflect on and engage with the given urban properties and constitution, to reconsider and redesign preselected urban fabrics towards spatially and socially sustainable places. The river of Daugava shaped the body of the historical Riga. Still nowadays the river has a wide-ranging impact to the current development of the city. Within The Big Reset on Neighbourhood Design Summer School four case study areas will be thoroughly examined to propose the best ways of using water areas and nearby territories for connecting different parts of the city and creating place and space for diverse public activities.
