SoSe 2011 - Seminar Master/Diplom

Architecture and Memory

In the architectural field memorials and commemorative works have become a discipline of its own. Famous projects like the Holocaust memorial in Berlin or the Vietnam Veterans memorial in Washington today have become part of the city’s touristic infrastructure. In Germany there is a long debate on ways of commemoration and adequate projects for the indoor and outdoor built environment. In Argentina, after the annulling of the amnesty laws and the prosecution of members of the military junta, the debate on how to deal with the actual places of injustice only just has begun. Similar discussions have started on places of the British colonialism in the UK or on places of the Franco dictatorship in Spain.

The objective of this course is to learn about the ongoing discussions and to scrutinize some of the most important projects. Finally as a joint project a brochure is to be produced that will reflect the outcome of the survey and discussion within the seminar.

The course will be held in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University.
