European Urban Studies

International Doctorate Programme European Urban Studies (IPP-EU)

Established in 2002, the International Doctorate Programme builds upon the Institute’s strong academic achievements and offers graduate students the chance to pursue their own research interests within this interdisciplinary and international structure. The structured programme aims to educate critically competent experts for urban space, with career perspectives in academia and in practice. The IPP-EU is especially distinctive for its clearly international character (multilingual; working languages English/German; worldwide research contacts and exchange possibilities), interdisciplinary approach (integrates urban design, urban sociology, project development and spatial planning) as well as its scientific and practice-related orientation.

Doctorate Students in the IPP European Urban Studies
Admission to the doctoral programme follows a competitive selection process consisting of two rounds. As an interdisciplinary programme designed for architects, urban developers, urban planners, urban sociologists, geographers, and graduates of other space-oriented disciplines, the European Urban Studies Programme expects its graduate students to immerse themselves in the often complex dialogue between different disciplines.

Presently, 35 doctorate students from across the world are doing research in the IPP-EU.

Mentoring
The IPP-EU takes responsibility for their graduate students, giving them quality supervision throughout their studies. Since the programme's length is explicitly defined, it is easier for both international and German students to determine how long they need to study. In addition, graduate students have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular language courses and international network events to facilitate integration at the Bauhaus University Weimar.

six semesters

Dr.-Ing. or Dr. phil.

IPP-Netzwerk

IPP Network
The IPP for European Urban Studies is counted among the nationwide network of International PhD Programmes, which, within the framework of the programme "Doctorates at Universities in Germany (PHD)", are endorsed by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It is the only IPP in Germany that is dedicated to urban research. Through the PHD programme, the DAAD and DFG support implementing recommendations for reforming PhD programmes as the third cycle in the Bologna Process. The resources from these institutions serve to promote structured PhD programmes, which are being set up where research centers of scientific excellency already exist.
