Arts and Research

Is art a research methodology? What kinds of work constitute artistic research? What forms of knowledge distinguish artistic knowledge from other forms of knowledge? What cognitive, social, and aesthetic processes are involved in the creation of research-based art? How do artistic research practices vary around the world? What kind of relationships with the audience or public are involved in artistic research? Does better research lead to better art? These are only a few of the fundamental questions investigated by the Department of Arts and Research within the framework of the PhD Programme for Art and Design. Further research interests include theories of relationality, methodological diversity, urban ecology, soil and biodiversity protection, food security (sovereignty), post-humanism, post-colonialism, and the Anthropocene.

Prof. Alex Toland moderates Panel 2 at »Relational Landscapes Symposium«

We are delighted to invite you to our online
Relational Landscapes Symposium
on
December 2nd 2021, 5:00 - 7:30 pm CET,
virtually hosted by the Department of Design, University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Germany.

At this symposium, we want to take a broader look through the lens of diverse presentations that navigate relational landscapes by satellite, data, foot and sailboat. With exciting contributions by our speakers Arturo Escobar, Amy Franceschini, Giacomo Nanni, Thiago da Costa Oliveira, Lynda C. Olman, Birgit Schneider, Fidel Thomet,

moderated by Andrés Burbano
and
Alexandra Toland, we will address questions
such as:

  • How can we make evident the interconnectedness of landscapes not only locally but also at a distance?
  • How can we make visible and narrate the diversity of relationships with communities that seem distant but are connected by shared histories, matter, atmosphere, people, non-human beings, and technologies?
