The task for this year’s iAAD course was to design a skyscraper on the Spreedreieck, one of Berlin’s most interesting building sites, the site for Mies van der Rohe’s legendary design for a skyscraper in 1922. The students were asked to choose any of three func-tions: a museum, a library or a theatre in combination with a hotel. The special challenge of the design project was to organise these public functions vertically and to connect them spatially with the immediate urban public space. The aim was to find a concept for the „European“ skyscraper and to integrate it into its larger urban context. The students were given the choice to organise the program within a single volume or within a constellation of several towers. The design course was divided into two phases: In the first phase the students were asked to approach the site from an urban point of view. In the 2nd phase they focused on the composition of the inner organisation, the relation and interaction of the two functions. The students were asked to focus on universal qualities of space rather than on the qualities of a unique object.
