Die Weimarer Stummfilm-Retrospektive

The Weimar Silent Film Retrospective was a series of events held as part of the Kunstfest Weimar, in which, from 2019 to 2025, rare films from the Weimar Republic were screened – films that had been shown in Weimar cinemas exactly 100 years ago. The focus was on films that were considered cinematic highlights and had to take economic conditions and state regulations into account. Accompanied by historical newsreels, introductions, lectures and film discussions with film, culture and music experts, all screenings were also accompanied by live music performed by internationally renowned silent film musicians. Following each event, the audience had the opportunity to chat and discuss the films with the organisers and experts in the ‘Cine-Corner’ at the Lichthaus Kino.
The Weimar Silent Film Retrospective was a collaboration between the Bauhaus University Weimar, the Weimar City Archives, the Lichthaus Kino and the Kunstfest Weimar. The project was led by Dr Simon Frisch, Dr Katrin Richter, Dirk Heinje, Sven Opel, Dr Jens Riederer and Richard Siedhoff. It was supported by the Thuringian State Chancellery, Sparkasse Mittelthüringen, the City of Weimar, the Thuringian State Agency for Political Education and the Bauhaus University Weimar.

A publication on the silent film retrospective is currently being prepared.
