Doctoral Thesis Office

The Doctoral Thesis Office of the University Library accepts the deposit copies. It issues the certificate required for obtaining the doctoral degree and sends it to the contact person in the respective faculty.
The Doctoral Thesis Office also provides information on submission formalities for both printed and digital copies.

Publication requirement for doctoral degrees and Habilitations (post-doctoral degrees)

Publication requirement for doctoral degrees and Habilitations (post-doctoral degrees)

Please note the doctoral regulations of the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Media, and Art and Design, including the examination regulations for the Art and Design / Fine Art / Media Art and Design doctoral programme for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

Doctoral candidates on the Ph.D. course must fully document at least the academic part of their work and the art/design part in the form of a written summary.

Submitting deposit copies to the university library is a requirement for the awarding of the Ph.D. The library makes copies available to other universities or libraries as part of the publication exchange programme.

Submission options

  • An electronic document and six printed and bound copies
  • Three publisher’s copies, if the work is being published by a publishing house or in a journal
  • Twenty printed and bound copies

Format information

Format information

The deposit copies must be submitted in the text and image format approved by the faculty. However, spelling and typography proofreading is welcome.

In addition to the text, the thesis includes the following:

  • A title page with the information specified in the doctoral regulations (date of defence, name of reviewers)
  • Sworn declaration (optional)
  • CV (optional)

If the version submitted contains a CV, this can be removed from the online version and replaced with blank pages.

Submission in digital format

  • File in PDF/A format
  • No copy protection or password on the file(s)

Submission in print format

The Bauhaus Research School helps students with low incomes to publish their theses by offering a printing subsidy.

  • A4 to A5
  • Soft cover or hard cover (no ring binding)

Submission as electronic document (OPUS Weimar)

Submission as electronic document (OPUS Weimar)

Theses in electronic format are published on the OPUS Weimar publication portal.

If you are considering having your thesis published by a publishing house in the near future, you should clarify the possibility of prior or parallel online publication with the publishing house.

For theses being published in a publication series by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar publishing house (Verlagsgruppe arts + science Weimar), the work may be published in parallel on the OPUS Weimar server in the version submitted for the doctoral examination under a contract formalised between the university and the publishing house.

Further information about OPUS is available in info sheet no. 18.

If (initial) publication is on OPUS Weimar, doctoral candidates are free to also publish their work in print format via a publishing house.

Six printed and bound copies must also be submitted alongside the online publication.

Publication on the OPUS Weimar publication Weimar involves the following steps:

  • Clarify the fundamentals of copyright and licensing
  • Provide a file in PDF/A format without copy or password protection
  • Choose a creative commons licence
  • Enter the metadata for the work in the OPUS publication form
  • Upload the file(s)
  • Submit the form

Your document will be approved after a formal examination. You will be informed by email.

Submission of a publishing house publication

Submission of a publishing house publication

If you opt for publication by a publishing house, please note the following:

  • Your publication’s imprint must state that it is a Bauhaus-Universität Weimar thesis.
  • The year of the oral examination must be stated.

If the title is changed by the publishing house, please note this in the imprint or another suitable location (e.g. by stating ‘The thesis was submitted under the title: ...’)

Three publisher’s copies are required to fulfil the publication requirement.

Since the amendment of the German Copyright Act (UrhG) in 2014, the authors of scientific contributions are entitled under specific conditions to publish these works in online repositories as a secondary publication, even if this right is not provided for by the publication contract concluded with the publisher of the initial publication. OPUS facilitates this secondary publication.
