The starting point for this book was research into the life story of Else Goldschmidt (1898‒1975), the world’s first female stockbroker. On 15 December 1927, she received admission to trade on the Berlin Stock Exchange at Burgstraße 25. She was the first woman in Germany to be entitled to attend the stock exchange meetings. This licence had been made possible by the gender equality enshrined in the constitution of the Weimar Republic, as well as by changes to stock exchange legislation, which lifted the centuries-long ban on women trading on the stock exchange.
