On Saturday, 30 May 2026, from 9 am to 3 pm, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will provide visitors with a comprehensive insight into its range of courses and answer the following questions: What is the right degree programme for me? How can I finance my studies? What can I expect in Weimar and on campus? These questions and others will be answered by Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Studierendenwerk Thüringen staff in the foyer of the Mensa am Park at Marienstraße 15 starting at 9 am. Guests will be provided with general and subject-specific information on studying.

From 4 to 13 May, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be hosting the Bauhaus Career Festival for the first time. This new event series aimed at students, graduates, and international talent offers a diverse programme focused on starting a career and includes workshops, digital matching, and a career networking fair.

Unter dem Titel »Mittelklassig modernisiert« stellt die Künstlerische Mitarbeiterin Karla Zipfel am Donnerstag, 7. Mai 2026, 19 Uhr, im Rahmen eines Künstlerinnengesprächs ihre Arbeiten der letzten Jahre vor. Die Veranstaltung im Deutschen Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt a.M. kann auch online via Zoom besucht werden.

After many years, the professorship for »Typography and Type Design« has now been filled once again. A public evening lecture hosted by Prof. Ute Lehrer at 6:15 pm on 7 May 2026 will examine global trends in the 21st century’s dominant form of housing – high-rise living – using the example of Toronto, Canada. The lecture is being held as part of the conference organised by the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) »Gewohnter Wandel« research training group and the Institute for European Urban Studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

This semester’s first Sonic Talk, hosted by the chairs of »Acoustic Ecologies and Sound Studies« and »Experimental Radio«, invites audiences to a special evening: renowned composer and researcher Curtis Roads presents a multichannel audio and video concert together with video artist Brian O’Reilly. The event takes place in collaboration with the chair of Electroacoustic Composition and Sound Art.

The Annual German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), which will be held in Weimar on 28 April 2026, will be focussing on the role of universities in a democratic society. HRK President Prof. Walter Rosenthal will be welcoming the heads of universities from across Germany as well as a number of guests from the fields of science, education, and politics. The guest of honour for the event will be Thuringia’s Minister President Mario Voigt.

The modernisation of key infrastructure – from electricity and heating to public transportation – requires investments that amount to billions of euros in the coming years. Municipal utility companies are particularly affected by these challenges. Within this context, the Professorship of Infrastructure Economics and Management at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, together with the »Thüringer Aufbaubank« and the »Landesgruppe Thüringen des Verbandes kommunaler Unternehmen«, is organising the »Infrastruktur- und Daseinsvorsorge-Politik in Thüringen« Conference in Erfurt on 28 April 2026 from 10 am to 5 pm. Academics and professionals will be participating in the conference in talks and panel discussions. Finance Minister Katja Wolf will be joining the event as keynote speaker.

What happens when art moves into empty prefabricated flats and uncovers traces of the past? Freie Kunst students at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are participating in the »Spuk im Hochhaus« exhibition for the Landesgartenschau in Leinefelde-Worbis. On the third floor of the »Blumenblock«, the students are investigating traces left behind by former residents and exploring questions of how people lived, remembrance, and coexistence. The exhibition will be on display for the duration of the Landesgartenschau, from Thursday 23 April to Sunday 11 October 2026.

Drei Studierende der Visuellen Kommunikation hatten im Wintersemester 2024/25 die seltene Gelegenheit, sechs inhaftierte Frauen in der Justizvollzugsanstalt (JVA) Chemnitz zu treffen, kennenzulernen und gemeinsam ein Fotoprojekt zu verwirklichen. Eine Publikation mit dem Titel »Durch Fotografie keine Einsichten« zeigt nun die entstandenen Arbeiten sowie ein Statement der am Projekt beteiligten Inhaftierten Anis, Moni, Chrisi, Pop, Löckchen und Art. Am Donnerstag, 23. April 2026, 19 Uhr, präsentieren die Autor*innen das Buch in der Universitätsbibliothek.

Im Rahmen einer Begrüßungsveranstaltung für Studierende der Umweltingenieurwissenschaften wurde am 8. April 2026 der neu gestaltete Wasserstoffbus »Walter Gropius« von Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und Stadtwirtschaft Weimar GmbH feierlich eingeweiht. Der Bus steht exemplarisch für die enge Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaft und kommunaler Praxis – und macht diese nun im Stadtbild sichtbar.

Am 28. April 2026 lädt die Stiftung Baukultur Thüringen in Kooperation mit dem DFG-Graduiertenkolleg Gewohnter Wandel der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt zum Baukulturgespräch »Wohnungsfrage StadtLand« in den Eiermannbau Apolda ein. Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung steht eine der drängendsten Herausforderungen im Freistaat: der gleichzeitige Bedarf an neuem Wohnraum in den Städten und zunehmender Leerstand im ländlichen Raum.

The ivory tower, once a symbol of academic thought and research, is a thing of the past. For years, progressive universities have opened their doors to a broader public through events such as open houses and science nights. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar also sees itself as more than just an educational and research institution and is an active participant in society. The University influences public discourse and takes responsibility that extends beyond campus. Visibility and connections to other spheres are essential to this: Research and teaching should not occur in isolation but instead should engage in productive dialogue with society.
