RED AF* is a visual storytelling project by Soo Ah Youn and Anastasia Fast. It explores the so-called Asian Flush, a genetic reaction to alcohol which is often overlooked despite carrying serious health risks. The project aims to raise awareness of this phenomenon that is rarely discussed in Western culture.
Around a third of the East Asian population in countries such as Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan is affected by the Asian flush. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the ALDH2 enzyme, which plays a key role in breaking down alcohol. As a result, the toxic substance acetaldehyde builds up in the body. Visible symptoms such as flushing, heat, nausea and palpitations are widespread, yet it is little known that those affected have an increased risk of cancer.
Nevertheless, the Asian flush is often dismissed as a mere 'glow' phenomenon or meme, particularly in Western culture. This is where RED AF* comes in: an illustrated book inspired by ukiyo-e featuring a humorous and empathetic story that combines knowledge, representation, and self-acceptance. The protagonist is a young woman who turns red after drinking. Through the character Blush, she learns to view her reaction not as a weakness, but as a warning signal from her body.
A website has been designed to accompany the book and explore the topic further. As a special feature, it slowly turns red as you scroll. There is also a community section where visitors can share experiences and ask questions as part of a collective empowerment initiative.
