Mit wem gehst du zur Wahl?

by Paula Gerharz, Sebastian Günter, Kevin Kulke and Philipp Merschkötter

In the run-up to the 2024 Thuringian state election, students of the 'Democrazy?' course developed campaigns to encourage people to vote. One such campaign, titled “Who are you voting with?”, was created by Paula Gerharz, Sebastian Günter, Kevin Kulke and Philipp Merschkötter. It takes a straightforward approach, treating participation in the election as a given from the outset. The question is not whether to vote, but with whom to go to the polling station.

This is answered in a series of animations and posters depicting unusual pairings at the ballot box, such as a skateboarding grandmother and her granddaughter. The campaign uses collage illustrations to express this diversity in an abstract and humorous way. Postcards featuring the character designs can be sent to arrange a 'voting date'. The campaign aims to convey subtly that democratic participation is a privilege, not just a duty, and that it is a social experience we shape together.

The campaign's key visual is a striking collage-style illustration. This style gives the characters a unique charm and makes them easier to animate. As part of the campaign, the students ran a workshop at Summaery 2024 where visitors could design their own collage characters and contribute them to the campaign.
