For the past seven months, students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering have been eagerly awaiting the upcoming concrete canoe regatta on 28 and 29 June 2019 in Heilbronn. Led by Thomas Bock, an engineer from the F. A. Finger Institute for Building Material Engineering, they want to prove that concrete can float! And move very quickly to boot. »The aim is to use the strength and waterproof nature of concrete to create light yet robust canoes«, project leader Bock explains. It therefore represents a fun way for students to learn how to work with concrete and collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team.
The men’s and women’s teams from Weimar plan to use their two boats to complete the 200-metre competition route along the Neckar in Heilbronn as quickly as possible. Prizes are not just reserved for sporting achievement, however – they will also be awarded for creativity of boat design. The project therefore combines technical expertise, a willingness to experiment, design skill and team spirit. The design of Weimar concrete boat »The Great Grey« received an award at the 2015 concrete canoe regatta.
This is the 17th time this event for sport enthusiasts from vocational schools, universities of applied sciences, universities and other institutions teaching concrete technology is taking place. The concrete canoe regatta is organised every other year by the German cement and concrete industry.
A test run in the Schwanseebad pool will show off the aesthetics of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar boats and test whether they are watertight.
