Student Government (StuKo) Department »pol.B« (Political Education)

The Student Government (StuKo) Department »pol.B« Introduces Itself:

In the left foreground, there is a circle of colorful plastic chairs. In the background, hung between two trees, there is a hand-painted Progress Pride Flag with a Black Power fist drawn on it.
[Translate to English:] Flagge für politische Demonstrationen, hergestellt vom StuKo-Referat »pol.B«. © »pol.B«.

»Pol.B is the StuKo department for political education. We offer a regular exchange among students on international political issues, lectures, books and films. We want to engage more students in political action by organizing and participating in demos, painting banners, writing speeches, and establishing a direct dialogue between students and the university administration. Pol.B aims to contribute to political thinking and empowerment within and beyond Bauhaus Universität Weimar and to counteract various forms of discrimination, especially taking into account the diversity of the student body.«

»As a StuKo department, Pol.B can serve as a framework for political conversations, workshops, demos and other activities, including our own political reading circle. Not only do we want to bring people together who are already politically active, but we also want to show all students ways to get involved with political issues. Since every aspect of life has a political dimension, and there is no such thing as being "unpolitical", our discussions and interests go beyond traditional political topics like parties and institutions.

Political education is of course important everywhere, and Weimar is no exception. Although this city might at first glance seem like a progressive oasis, isolated from other areas in Thuringia and Germany, it has been continuously failing to provide a safe space for BIPoC, LGBTQIA+ and Jewish people. Right-wing, fascist violence is all too present in this city. At the same time, Goethe, Schiller and the Bauhaus are the focus of most narratives about Weimar, while the city’s role in German colonialism and National Socialism is largely ignored or suppressed. And we need to become aware of the fact that also the university itself is not free from institutional, systemic discrimination, which is rooted not just in a few individuals who abuse their power within the university structure, but also in the structure itself that still too often silently tolerates and thereby condones these forms of violence.

Pol.B wants to facilitate facing and discussing these difficult but urgent topics, uniting international students and students with German citizenship in allyship and solidarity – whether this means to shed light on political discourses and developments in other countries or here in Germany and in Weimar. It would be a lost potential not to exchange political knowledge and experiences in the effort for human dignity and equal rights during our shared time in university.

Only together we can make an impact: we are an open group and would love to grow with new people who would like to participate, share their ideas and suggest new activities! We hold weekly meetings every Monday, 8pm. If you are interested in joining us, just reach out to us and say hi!«
