The Application
Application Deadlines
After you have been nominated by your home university, you can apply for a study abroad position at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar during the following periods:
- for a place in the Bauhaus winter semester: 01 April to 15 June
- for a place in the Bauhaus summer semester: 01 October to 15 November
Please note: The Welcome Events as well as the German Intensive Language Course at the Language Center take place before the start of the lecture period. For the Bauhaus winter semester in September, for the Bauhaus summer semester in March. Please take this into account when planning your arrival. Step 2 | Apply for a residence permit
[Translate to English:] As per legal determination, if you come from a country outside of the EU, you need to apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) at the “Ausländerbehörde” (Foreigner´s Registration Office) in Weimar.

For this check you need to send these documents to the “Ausländerbehörde” via e-mail (Terminvergabe.abh[at]stadtweimar.de ):
- your visa for Germany
- an explanation of your purpose of stay (i.e. for studying) in Weimar
- your exact duration of stay
- your planned arrival date
If you need to apply for a residence permit, the “Ausländerbehörde” will send you an e-mail including a list of documents that you need to bring for your appointment with them.
Please note
For receiving a residence permit, Non-EU citizens must present a proof of finance (about 900 Euro for each month of your stay in Germany) to the Foreigner's Registration Office.
Step 3 | Registration at the "Ausländerbehörde"
[Translate to English:] All each exchange students are to be registered as a citizen of the city of Weimar after their arrival.
Please make an appointment with “Ausländerbehörde” (Foreigner´s Registration Office) to register and get your “Meldebescheinigung” (Registration Certificate), which serves as your proof of residence in Germany and is prerequiste for opening a German bank account.

For your appointment at the Ausländerbehörde, you need to bring the following documents:
- “Mietvertrag” (Rental Contract)
- “Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung” (Housing provider confirmation, which you will get upon request by your landlord or landlady)

you might want to schedule your appointment well before your arrival, as there may be long waiting times for an appointment (up to 4 weeks).
Third Country Nationals
What is a third-country national?

Students who study full-time at a European university without European citizenship and spend a semester abroad in Germany from there, are referred to as "third-country nationals" in the sense of the law on immigration.
To ensure that your stay in Germany is legally confirmed, a number of documents need to be submitted to the "German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees" (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge) prior to your arrival in Germany.
After checking the documents, the "German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees" will issue a so called "confirmation of your legal status" for the time of your stay in Germany. Do not worry - we will assist you in how to obtain this confirmation.

Step 1 | What do you have to do before entering Germany?
In order for us to support you in this process in the best possible way, you must follow the following steps:
Please submit the following 7 documents in GERMAN or ENGLISH to us by e-mail as soon as you have received your Letter of Acceptance from us:
- residence permit issued by the EU country in which you are currently studying, which is valid for the entire time of your stay in Germany at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (copy is sufficient)
- recognised, valid passport/ passport replacement (copy is sufficient)
- Proof of participation in an EU-funded mobility programme (e.g. ERASMUS Grant Agreement) (copy is sufficient)
- Letter of Acceptance from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (copy is sufficient)
- Proof that you are able to cover your living expenses for the time you are in Germany (900 Euros per month) (e.g. a Screenshot of the amount on your or your parent's bank account)
- Proof of sufficient international health insurance cover which is valid in Germany (copy is sufficient)
- Completed notification form (copy or scan is sufficient)
Please also contact the German Embassy in your home country to find out whether you personally have to observe any other things when entering the country.

We at the International Office will submit the documents for you to the "Federal Office for Migration and Refugees"; you are not allowed to do this yourself.
Step 2 | What do you have to do after your arrival in Weimar?
Just like "regular" non-EU citizens doing a semester abroad in Germany, after your arrival in Weimar you will have to:
- register as a citizen of the city of Weimar (information on this process can be found in our "checklist for incoming students")

Student Dormitories
Furnished rooms are available for rent in the student dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen. Accommodations consist predominantly of single rooms and single apartments. Single rooms are for private use, while kitchens and bathrooms are generally shared. A single apartment is a one-room apartment with kitchen/kitchenette, bath/shower and toilet for private use.
When concluding a rental agreement, a deposit of 300 Euro is required.
The website of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen provides an overview of the student housing in Weimar. The most popular student dormitory for international students is Hummelstrasse 2.

Shared Flats
Many students in Weimar live in shared flats (in German: Wohngemeinschaft or WGs). In a WG you have your own room in a large flat with a shared bathroom and kitchen. The room price depends on size and the total rental costs for the flat. The rooms are usually not furnished, unless it is sub-let.
In Weimar the rental price for a room is between €250 and €350 per month.

- Are there additional costs for water, gas, heating and electricity or are these included in the rent?
- Is the room furnished or unfurnished?
- Is there internet access?
- Is the German Rundfunkbeitrag included in the rent?

| Try to get to know your prospective flatmates beforehand by meeting them in person or online and check whether your lifestyles match and you share the same expectations. In a shared flat, you have rights and duties, which are mutually negotiated with all flatmates. The most important rule is to respect each other's privacy and to stick to rules agreed on (like the cleaning rota etc.). Those rules may be subject to change and can be adjusted if necessary. It is crucial that you feel comfortable and safe in your shared flat. If you feel uncomfortable, talk about your problems. If you feel like you cannot handle the situation on your own, please get some external help. You can contact the International Office for counseling. Please check each offer carefully and be critical if you encounter any dubious offers or feel uncomfortable when being in contact with future landlord/landlady or flatmates! |

EU citizens have an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) that provides basic health insurance coverage.

In Germany, sufficient health insurance coverage is mandatory for obtaining a visa and immatriculation at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
You may either obtain a German national health insurance for students OR – if you have a private health insurance for the time of your studies abroad in Germany from your home country –, you have to get a confirmation of sufficient health insurance coverage.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar does not charge tution fees. This includes exchange students.
However, the payment of the the semester contribution is obligatory for every student (around €200 - you can find out precisely here).
The contribution is used for issuing your student ID called “Thuringian University and Studierendenwerk Card”, or “Thoska” for short, which gives you access to the following services:
- Student ID (e.g. for discounts at the zoo in Erfurt or swimming pools)
- Library card
- Ticket for the German National Theater (DNT)
- Payment card for dining halls, cafeterias and courses with registration fees (e.g. sport courses)
- Train, bus and regional railway ticket within Thuringia (including public transport and regional trains)
- when activated: Key card to select-ed buildings and rooms

Broadcasting Licence Fee
In Germany, every person must pay the so-called "Rundfunkbeitrag" (Broadcasting Licence Fee). This is a fee of 18,36 euros per month that must be paid per household, regardless of whether you use the services of the public media institutions (TV, radio, etc.).
If you live together with several people in one household, you can share the fee. For example, 4 people living in one household each pay 4,59 Euros per month.
Please check if the broadcasting fee is already part of your rent by contacting the landlord/landlady regarding this.

The Learning Agreement is a contract between you, your home university and the host faculty at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. In it, you agree which study achievements you want to complete in Weimar and to what extent.
The Learning Agreement is only obligatory for incoming ERASMUS students.
Please use our course offerings in the electronic course catalog (BISON) to create your preliminary Learning Agreement. Discuss the course selection with the exchange coordinator at your home university. Please also consult the International Counsellor of your future faculty at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. He/she is responsible for answering academic questions about your studies at Bauhaus-Universität.

Residence Permit
If you are not a citizen of the EU, of a EEA country or Switzerland, you need to change your visa into a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel).
For this, you need to make an appointment with/at the Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde) before your visa expires. Write an email to terminvergabe.abh[at]stadtweimar.de
As the residence permit is valid for only a limited period of time you might have to prolong it during your stay. Please contact the International Office regarding the required stamp on your enrolment certificate.
[Translate to English:] Die Thüringer Hochschul- und Studierendenwerkskarte (thoska) ist der Studierenden- und Dienstausweis für die Weimarer Hochschulen. Sie erhalten die Karte zu Beginn Ihres Aufenthaltes an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

- Dienstausweis
- Karte für die Nutzung der Universitätsbibliothek
- Bezahlmedium in Mensen und Cafeterien sowie für kostenpflichtige Kurse (Sport- und Sprachkurse)
- Zum Drucken, Kopieren, Scannen an den Druckern der Universität
- Zutrittsberechtigungskarte zu ausgewählten Gebäuden und Räumen (nach Freischaltung)
- kostenfreie Nutzung des öffentlichen Nahverkehrs (Bus in Weimar und anderen VMT-Städten sowie Regionalzüge in Thüringen)
Aufbuchen von Geldbeträgen
An den Auflade-Terminals kann mit der ec-Karte (und Bargeld) ein Geldbetrag auf die elektronische Geldbörse der thoska aufgeladen werden, min. 10 €, max. 200 €.

Wenn Sie weniger als drei Monate in Deutschland sind, benötigen Sie kein deutsches Bankkonto. Erkundigen Sie sich im Vorfeld bei Ihrer Bank in Ihrem Heimatland, um festzustellen, ob diese eine Kooperation mit einer deutschen Bank hat. Dies kann Ihnen Gebühren für Auslandsüberweisungen sparen.
Wenn Sie länger als drei Monate in Deutschland sind, empfehlen wir Ihnen, ein deutsches Girokonto zu eröffnen. Sie erhalten eine EC-Karte, mit der Sie bezahlen und Geld abheben können. Außerdem wird Ihnen Ihr Geld bzw. Ihr Stipendium auf dieses Konto überwiesen. Bevor Sie jedoch ein Konto eröffnen, informieren Sie sich über verschiedene Angebote und vergleichen Sie Serviceleistungen, Gebühren und Konditionen der Banken.

If you are staying in Germany for a longer period, it is worth taking out a mobile phone contract with a German mobile phone provider. This way, you will save costs when making phone calls and using mobile internet within Germany. Mobile services are available either through a monthly contract or pre-paid services. Before you decide, be sure to compare different offers, as the services and costs can vary greatly.

Deutsche Kultur
Deutschland hat wie viele Länder kulturelle Eigenheiten, die Besucher*innen zunächst unbekannt erscheinen können. Im Folgenden finden Sie Informationen zu Besonderheiten und durchschnittlichen Kosten in Deutschland und Weimar.
Besonderheiten in Deutschland
- Läden und Supermärkte haben nur von Montag bis Samstag geöffnet.
- Sonntag ist Ruhetag in Deutschland. Alle Läden bleiben geschlossen.
- Sonntags bleiben auch Apotheken und Arztpraxen geschlossen. Es gibt an diesem Tag jedoch eine Notfallapotheke und auch eine Notfallsprechstunde.
- In Deutschland kann nicht überall mit einer EC- oder Kreditkarte gezahlt werden. Bäckereien, Fleischereien, kleine Geschäfte, Kioske und einige Bars/Restaurants nehmen häufig nur Bargeld an.
- Das übliche Trinkgeld bei einem Besuch im Restaurant, einer Bar oder einem Café entspricht 10%.
- In Deutschland wird der Müll getrennt nach Papier-, Plastik-, Glas-, Rest- bzw. Biomüll entsorgt. Dafür gibt es für jedes Haus entsprechend farbige Mülltonnen. Hier können Sie sich näher über die Mülltrennung informieren.
- Auf die meisten Dosen, Plastik- und Glasflaschen gibt es in Deutschland einen Pfand zwischen 8 und 25 Cent. Dies ist mit einem Symbol gekennzeichnet. Statt die Flaschen und Dosen über den Müll zu entsorgen, werden sie in Supermärkten über einen Leergutautomaten abgegeben.
- In der Wohnung werden keine Straßenschuhe getragen, sondern dicke Socken oder Hausschuhe, also Schuhe, die nur für den Innenbereich gedacht sind.
- In Deutschland ist täglich von 22 Uhr bis 6 Uhr Nachtruhe. Das bedeutet, dass alle Geräusche wie Musik, Unterhaltungen, etc. nur auf Zimmerlautstärke erfolgen dürfen.
- Die gängige Begrüßungs- und Verabschiedungsformel ist das Händeschütteln. Seit der Corona-Pandemie wird darauf jedoch weitgehend verzichtet.
- Unpünktlichkeit gilt in Deutschland als unhöflich. Sollten Sie sich einmal verspäten, geben Sie daher im Vorfeld durch einen kurzen Anruf, eine Textnachricht oder eine E-Mail Bescheid.
Sprachkurse
The Language Centre offers language courses at various levels (CEFR) for students, staff and guests of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
The Language Centre offers German courses for all levels (A1-C1). Weekly courses are offered during the semester and three-week intensive courses are offered in March and September.
The Language Centre also offers courses in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Swedish. Courses in Russian, Portuguese, and Arabic are also offered regularly.
Freizeitangebote
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers a number of sports programmes for students and employees through the University Sports Centre. Courses are held both during and outside of the lecture period. You can register for sports classes online. Further information on all of the courses can be found here.
Thanks to its rich history, Weimar offers a broad range of cultural activities. The Klassik Stiftung Weimar includes nearly 30 different museums in and around Weimar, and brings together the Bauhaus, the Weimar Republic, Weimar Classicism and historical icons such as Goethe and Schiller, Nietzsche and Duchess Anna Amalia. The Thuringian Museum of Pre- and Ancient History and the Deutsche Bienenmuseum Weimar are especially enjoyable for the whole family.
The Deutsche Nationaltheater Weimar, the »mon ami« cultural centre and the Stellwerk Weimar offer a wide range of classical, experimental and modern theatre, music and dance performances and shows on their stages.
The Cinestar in der Schützengasse and Filmwelt in the Atrium show the latest releases and big blockbusters. For film lovers, the city's two art house cinemas, Lichthauskino Weimar and Kino im mon ami offer art, indie and house films from all over the world in their original versions as well as silent films with live accompaniment.
The ACC Galerie Weimar, the Galerie Eigenheim, the Kunsthalle Harry Graf Kessler, as well as countless other Weimar galleries, exhibit contemporary, 20th and 21st century art exhibitions.
But it is not just Weimar, the entire state of Thuringia is home to countless worthwhile destinations: Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the Kyffhäuser Monument, the Hainich National Park and the Thuringian Forest, as well as the Erfurt Cathedral in the state's capital city. Essengehen in Weimar
Thuringian cuisine is characterised by hearty dishes such as Thuringian dumplings, Sauerbraten, Mutzbraten, Rostbrätl, Rouladen or the traditional Bratwurst. You can find numerous restaurants in Weimar that offer this type of traditional cuisine. But Weimar is also home to Italian, Greek, Korean, Vietnamese, Indian, French and Spanish restaurants. In the afternoons, cafés invite you to take a coffee break with a slice of traditional Thuringian cake an other sweet treats. You can find an overview of Weimar’s restaurants and cafés here.
Feiern in Weimar
The Kasseturm student club, C.Keller and Beatcorner are hotspots for concerts and parties in Weimar. Bars like the Reservebank, Zum Falken, weinbar weimar and Salon Konetzny provide a relaxed atmosphere for grabbing a drink with friends or colleagues.

[Translate to English:] Um Ihren Aufenthalt zu verlängern, nehmen Sie bitte zunächst Kontakt zu dem:der
International Counsellor:in Ihrer Bauhaus-Fakultät auf. Besprechen Sie mit ihm/ihr, ob eine Verlängerung aus Sicht der Fakultät möglich wäre.
Bitten Sie um eine schriftliche Bestätigung der Möglichkeit zur Verlängerung Ihres Aufenthaltes, indem Sie das Formular "Verlängerung des Auslandsstudiums für Incoming-Studierende" ausfüllen und von allen Beteiligten unterzeichnen lassen.
SCHRITT 2 | Zustimmung Ihrer Heimat-Universität
[Translate to English:] Nachdem Sie eine schriftliche Zusage zur Verlängerung von Ihrer Bauhaus-Fakultät erhalten haben, kontaktieren Sie die Kontaktperson für den Studierendenaustausch an Ihrer Heimatuniversität und bitten sie/ihn ebenfalls um eine Unterschrift auf dem Verlängerungsantrag.
SCHRITT 3 | Bestätigung des International Office der Bauhaus-Universität
[Translate to English:] Wenn Sie die Unterschriften Ihrer Heimatuniversität und Ihrer Bauhaus-Fakultät eingeholt haben, senden Sie den Verlängerungsantrag bitte an das International Office der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (incoming[at]uni-weimar.de). Nach der Unterzeichnung durch uns, senden wir Ihnen den Verlängerungsantrag per Mail zurück. Reichen Sie den vollständigen Antrag bitte als Bestätigung bei Ihrer Heimatuniversität ein.
SCHRITT 4 | Überweisung des Semesterbeitrags
[Translate to English:] Nachdem Ihr Antrag auf Verlängerung von Ihrer Heimauniversität, Ihrer Bauhaus-Fakultät und dem International Office der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar befürwortet wurde, müssen Sie den Semesterbeitrag überweisen. Bitte folgen Sie dafür den Anweisungen auf der Webseite des Dezernat Studium und Lehre und beachten Sie die dort genannten Deadlines.
SCHRITT 5 | Prüfung Krankenversicherung
[Translate to English:] Bitte nehmen Sie ggf. Kontakt zur Ihrer (Auslands-)Krankenversicherung auf, um sicherzustellen, dass Ihr Versicherungsschutz den verlängerten Zeitraum abdeckt.
SCHRITT 6 | Prüfung Aufenthaltsstatus
[Translate to English:] Bitte informieren Sie sich über Ihren rechtlichen Status in Deutschland und prüfen Sie gemeinsam mit der "Ausländerbehörde", ob im Hinblick auf Ihre Aufenthaltsberechtigung Handlungsbedarf besteht.
De-Registering at the Bürgerbüro (municipal registration authority)
Before you leave Weimar and return to your home country, you will need to de-register both yourself and your flat at the City of Weimar's Ausländerbehörde (immigration office). You will need valid ID for this. Find out more on registering and de-registering a flat here (in German only).

Housing: Rental Contract, Water and Electricity
Be sure to give notice well in advance before you move out of your flat or shared flat so that you do not have to continue paying rent after you’ve moved out. The notice period in German can vary, but it is generally between one and three months.
Also make sure that you cancel the water, electricity and heating at the same time. It is best to ask the property owner about this. If this your water, electricity and heating are not cancelled through the property owner, you will have to cancel these services separately through the appropriate service providers, such as Stadtwerke Weimar and Wasserversorgungszweckverband Weimar.
Bank Account
Be sure to close your bank account before you leave Weimar. This must be done in person for identity proof reasons.
Broadcasting Licence Fee
De-register for the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) by filling out the de-registration form on their website and select the option »Ich ziehe dauerhaft ins Ausland« (I am moving abroad permanently).

Mobile Phone Contracts / Mobile Internet
If you have WiFi in your flat or WG through an internet provider, be sure to cancel this service in good time before you leave. The same applies to German phone contracts.
De-Registering at the University Library
Before you leave the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, you have to de-register at the University Library. This should be done in person at the Library’s service desk. You will receive a document confirming that you have no overdue book or outstanding fines.
Returning Your Employee ID (thoska)
You will need to return your thoska to the International Office before you leave.
De-Registering from School and Daycare
If your child(ren) came with you to Weimar and attended daycare or school, be sure to de-register them in good time before you leave.
