»Radiophonic Spaces« is coming to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

Following the successful start of the tour in Basel and Berlin, the »Radiophonic Spaces« radio art exhibition will stop off in Weimar from 26 July to 19 September 2019. The opening ceremony - at 6pm on Friday 26 July 2019 - kicks off the three-day launch event involving performances, concerts, discussions and workshops at the University Library as well as in different locations around Weimar.

»Radiophonic Spaces« is transforming two floors of the University Library into a sonic journey through radio art of the last 100 years: visitors can discover a space with over 200 radio pieces, for which they are provided with headphones and specially programmed smartphones. »Radiophonic Spaces« is an immersive and unique experience for every visitor: guests are able to linger on individual radio pieces and bounce between current and historical perspectives - thus discovering specific dimensions of the thematically curated works for themselves.

»Radiophonic Spaces« has been developed under the direction of the Professorship of Experimental Radio at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: Led by Prof. Nathalie Singer, a team of researchers and artists conceptualised the accessible radio space, which was designed by the artist, architect and musician Cevdet Erek.

The »Radiophonic Places – Follow the Radio Wagon«, which launches on the weekend of 26 to 28 July 2019, will open the exhibition with a mobile radio studio. Performances, concerts, discussions and workshops relating to the topic of »100 Years of Bauhaus | 100 Years of Radiophony« are open to the public and will be taking place at various locations around Weimar city centre. They will be broadcast live via bauhaus.fm and 106.6MHz. Over a 48-hour period, radio artists and academics, along with former and current students, will critically address questions concerning the political potential of audio cultures (Hörkulturen) as well as the consequences of technical developments for radio art in addition to exploring alternative radio formats.

Background:
Radiophonic Spaces is a project of the Chair of Experimental Radio at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in cooperation with the Museum Tinguely and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW). Funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, Swiss National Science Foundation, State Chancellery of Thuringia, Hertie Foundation, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Goethe-Institut as well as Hanna and Dieter Paulmann. It has emerged from the interdisciplinary research project »Radiophonic Cultures – Environments and Archives in Hybrid Media System«.
