You may easily find all e-books licensed to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the online catalogue (OPAC).
You will be able to access the full text documents from within the Bauhaus-Universität's IP range.
Many of the online services licensed by the University Library can also be accessed and used from outside the university network using the authentication service Shibboleth. Generally each service's start page will provide a way to log in via Shibboleth. You will have to select our institution in a pulldown menu, listed under »B – Bauhaus-Universität Weimar«. To authenticate yourself, you will need to enter the same login ID and password you use to log in to university services (not your library account!). Sometimes you may need to reload the document to be provided with a full text download option.
To access the university's internal web pages or online resources unable to be accessed via Shibboleth, you will need a VPN client. Using the online catalogue (OPAC) you may access licensed e-books published by Duncker & Humblot from the subject areas of law, political science and philosophy. Printing is limited to 50 pages. Once you complete a one-time registration process, you may download files and print from them indefinitely.
As an aggregator, Ebook Central offers e-books by many national and international publishers from all relevant subject areas. Licensed items are listed and can be searched in the online catalogue (OPAC).
E-books may usually be read online directly. University members may access materials from outside the university network via Shibboleth as well as use additional options: printing, downloads, bookmarks, comments and highlighting.
The average quota for printing and saving is 40% of the full text, or 20% for copying and pasting. These quotas may deviate according to publishers' terms. If you are registered as a »guest« without using your own login data, these quotas will be halved.
Downloaded chapters will remain available indefinitely but may not be searched.
You will often be able to download an entire e-book and read it offline in epub/PDF/A format for 7 days. This requires Adobe Digital Editions to be installed on your device. Bluefire Reader is an alternative app for smartphones. Once one user downloads an e-book, it will be locked for all other users for the rest of the day.

The University Library has licensed different publishers' e-books with the provider EBSCO, mainly from the subject area of economics. University members may access these e-books from home via Shibboleth.
The platform ScienceDirect offers access to a large number of e-books published by Elsevier. Titles are also listed in the online catalogue (OPAC). Individual chapters are available in HTML or PDF format; contents available in HTML format are additionally provided in epub or mobi format. Shibboleth ensures access from off campus for university members.
The online catalogue (OPAC) enables you to access e-books from the subject areas of law and economics published by Erich Schmidt Verlag. The collection is being expanded continually. You will be able to download full text PDF files.
The University Library provides e-books published by de Gruyter/Birkhäuser/transcript. They are listed in the Online-Katalog (OPAC) and may be accessed on the publisher's own platform De Gruyter Online. These publications are available across the whole campus; university members may also access them from off campus via Shibboleth. E-books may be downloaded as PDF files by chapters; titles published after May 2014 are additionally available in epub format. The e-books are identical to their respective printed equivalent. You will be able to cite page numbers correctly. In addition, DeGruyter provides its own open access platform.
The University Library has licensed e-books from the subject areas of computers, technology and economy published by Hanser Verlag. You will be able to search for them both in the online catalogue (OPAC) and in the Hanser e-Library. You may download items as PDF files by chapter as well as print them with no limit. Bibliographic data may be carried over to common reference management software. Access via Shibboleth is available to university members.
Engineering science e-books by the Institution of Civil Engineers that are licensed to the University Library may be searched for in the Online-Katalog (OPAC). Items may be downloaded by chapter and printed. A way of creating citations is provided. In addition, university members may access items from off campus via Shibboleth.
The e-book bundles "Film Studies" and "Philosophy" are licensed on the JSTOR platform. You can find all e-books in the University Library's online catalogue (OPAC) or do research directly on JSTOR. Individual chapters may be downloaded as PDF files. The e-books are identical to their respective printed equivalent. You will be able to cite page numbers correctly. University members will be able to access items from off campus via Shibboleth.

The University Library has licensed the following bundles: »Engineering 2010«, »Technik und Informatik« (technology and computer science), »J.B. Metzler Geisteswissenschaften« (humanities), »Springer Wirtschaftswissenschaften« (economics) sowie »Sozialwissenschaften und Recht« (social science and law). The University Library provides access to the »utb-studi-e-book« bundle, which contains numerous electronic textbooks, from within the university network. The e-books are listed in the online catalogue (OPAC). They are identical to their respective printed editions. Items may be downloaded by chapter and be printed. University members can access the collection from outside the university network using Shibboleth.
Please note: direct links, such as from a Moodle course, cannot be set from off campus. After authentication through Shibboleth you will have to start a new search. Additionally, personalization options (bookmarks, comments) by remote access are, to date, blocked.

One of the great advantages of a digital book is the lack of any waiting period. The e-books will be available directly, and there is no loan period or return date. Most e-books are fully searchable by text recognition. Some providers will allow you to search all available full texts at once. Thanks to text recognition, you will be able to quickly and easily copy and file quotations or insert them into a document. E-books licensed by the library are suitable for scientific citation. Since they are largely available in (fixed) PDF format, unambiguous citations and page references can be given. In addition, many PDF editions of books are identical to the print editions.
E-books licensed by the University Library are available in PDF format. You will generally be able to download single chapters or entire books as a PDF file. To read the documents, you will need a PDF reader installed. PDF files may be saved locally to your device or printed, even if your device is offline. Several providers also offer e-books in epub oder mobi (Kindle) formats.
You will be able to read e-books in PDF format at library terminals or on your own desktop PC, laptop, e-reader, tablet or smartphone, as long as they have PDF reader software installed. There will be no additional cost to you.
A great amount of software is available to view and work with e-books, including many free readers (also known as viewers). These applications allow you to open and read PDF files. Additional options may include higlighting, setting bookmarks and managing your own library. Not every software is able to edit, convert or merge PDFs.
Some popular free applications for your desktop or laptop PC are Adobe Reader, PDF-XChange and Foxit Reader. E-readers like the Amazon Kindle range, Kobo or Tolino will display PDF files using onboard software. Depending on the operating system, different apps are available for tablets and smartphones. For Apple devices, Goodreader or iAnnotate are recommended.
Please note that highlights and bookmarks may be lost changing from one application to another.
PDF readers will enable you to save comments, notes and bookmarks in a document. This allows you to mark and retrieve important information.
Many publishers and providers make their e-books available on their own platforms, which allows access to additional options other than downloads. For example, you may export citations and add them to reference management software (›Export Citation‹). An article's or chapter's own footnotes or references may be linked to additional sources (›References‹). If you register an account with a provider, you will be able to set up your own ›bookshelf‹. This allows you to find all ›your‹ books at once without the need to download them one by one.
The use of e-books and other electronic materials is subject to special legal conditions. Please note and comply with the terms and conditions listed on the publishers' and providers' own websites. Access to electronic materials requires your agreement. Generally, the use and distribution of licensed materials is only allowed for personal, educational and research purposes. Systematic mass download of items is prohibited, as is distribution in P2P networks or on similar platforms.
