To mark the »International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women« (25 November), the Equal Opportunity Office will be screening the film »SHE SAID« (original English language version with German subtitles, 129 min, PG 12) in the Maurice Halbwachs Auditorium. Admission is free.
Content:
In 2017, a special report in the New York Times sparked worldwide debate: powerful Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was alleged to have sexually harassed and abused women over a period of decades. Several women took the huge risk of going public with their experiences of abuse — their courage motivated many more women to break their silence. The #MeToo movement was born.
The film »SHE SAID« by director Maria Schrader tells the true story of the two journalists who brought to light the systematic abuse of women in the US film industry: Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey's research revealed how meetings in hotel rooms were used for sexual assaults, exposing a well-oiled machine of repression, blackmail and fear. With great courage and perseverance, the reporters defied a network of executives, companies, lawyers and agents to stop a serial offender — and in doing so exposed an entire system that made his abuse of power possible in the first place.
Background:
The film is based on the non-fiction book »She Said — Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement« by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, published by Penguin Press in 2019. With their risky investigations, the two journalists contributed significantly to the emergence of the #MeToo movement.
