Those who are interested in participating in the programme in August have the opportunity to choose from a total of 17 different courses. The courses offered are based on the core disciplines of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and attract students from all over the world.
In addition to the instructors who have conducted courses for Bauhaus Summer School for many years, there are also some new instructors this year who have joined the programme and are offering exciting new courses. Two of these new instructors are Melinda Barnadas and Tae Hwang from one of our partner universities, the University of California, San Diego. The US American artist-duo will design and build a 1:1 scale pavilion on the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar campus together with 20 international students. »It is very interesting for us to design this type of project together with participants from different cultures and various educational backgrounds in a place that is so special for designers«, Melinda Barnadas explains.
The specialized technical course programme is complemented by a series of intensive language courses. The courses in English and German are particularly popular. Anyone who is interested in a lingual challenge can sign up for a two-week course in Chinese. All of the language classes are taught by native speakers and are rounded off with regional studies project work. A multitude of extracurricular activities allow for intercultural exchange, as well as excursions to Berlin and Dessau, a film series at the mon ami theatre or a special tour by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar.
Summer courses have proved to be very popular in Germany. In 2014, over 400 students from 70 different counties registered for courses at the Bauhaus Summer School in architecture, art, engineering and languages. The number of applicants for the technical courses has increased by 22 percent over the last three years.
This summer programme offers students and graduate students a chance to sample the academic opportunities at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and to make personal contacts. This explains why 3 out of 4 participants at the Bauhaus Summer School have said that they are interested in studying or pursuing a Ph.D. at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Special campus and work shop tours are therefore an important part of the Bauhaus Summer School as well as academic advising opportunities and information sessions.
