This new junior professorship belongs to the department of Construction Engineering. It examines structures with significant risk potential, lightweight and tent constructions, and the use and mechanisms of coupling and damping elements, as well as interaction phenomena in standard construction. »Interactions between components, buildings and building equipment and between the ground and other materials under extreme shifting factors are often very difficult to assess, and often result in unexpected damage«, Jun. Prof. Abrahamczyk explains.

»Guaranteeing long-term safety and load-bearing capacity of buildings and infrastructure facilities, in particular under extreme factors and environmental conditions, requires reliable forecast models and specific risk analyses«, he adds. Building on this idea has produced an entirely separate field of tension research with which the newly appointed Junior Professor is very familiar.

Variety of links to research and teaching activities
During his earlier academic career at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Jun. Prof. Abrahamczyk investigated structural damage resulting from earthquakes in seismically active areas. In doing so, he identified the relevant parameters for predicting how multi-storey buildings would behave and tested digital methods for the system analysis of advanced structures. As the director of the Research Training Group 1462 ‘Evaluation of Coupled Numerical and Experimental Partial Models in Structural Engineering’, he also devoted significant attention to systematically mapping interactions between structures, equipment, ground surfaces and materials. 

In addition, Jun. Prof. Abrahamczyk developed numerous international contacts with partner universities and students as part of his teaching activities at the Bauhaus Summer School and the ‘Erasmus + Strategic Partnerships’ project. The target audience for his classes includes international Master’s students from flood-prone and earthquake-prone regions who learn at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar how to tackle the dangers of natural phenomena, undertake risk analyses and begin innovative operations as engineers in their native countries. It is also suitable for German students on the ‘Bauingenieurwesen – Konstruktiver Ingenieurbau’ Master’s degree programme, who will learn how to deal with the impact of  extreme, shifting factors. Jon. Prof. Abrahamczyk will be continuing with existing and project-based teaching formats.
