The Institute's work focusses on current issues and the challenges posed by spatial development. Based on the goal of contributing to spatial and ecological justice, researchers and scientists from various disciplines examine socio-ecological transformation, social participation and heritage. Together, they develop joint teaching and research projects. The challenges facing society are global, necessitating the international profile of the Institute. The Institute comprises nine professorships and junior professorships who deal with urban and spatial development issues, as well as urban and rural life, focussing on, but not exclusively, European regions.
IfEU directors Daniela Zupan and Sigrun Langneror explain that for its anniversary year, the Institute will be reflecting on its image and its future. The term »Europäische Urbanistik«, for instance, will be brought in to question as a frame of reference in a series of talks. The anniversary programme has been curated by a steering group including members from various status groups and has set the structure and will be overseeing the process. Those interested are warmly invited to get involved in the anniversary programme and to take part in the events. Steering group members Dorothee Rummel and Grischa Bertram are especially looking forward to participative and inclusive and accessible event formats.
The festivities begin on Thursday, 11 April 2024 at 1.30 pm in the Main Building (Oberlichtsaal) with a panel discussion on the term »Europäische Urbanistik«. This will be followed by a showcase of IfEU teaching and research projects, as well as Urban Studies’ student projects at 3 pm in the foyer.
