Faculty of Art and Design presents animated explanatory videos for prospective students

»How does an aptitude test work?« and »What’s life like in Weimar?« – these and countless other questions preoccupying prospective students are now answered in a series of six hand-made, animated explanatory videos. The clips are available on the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar website, on the university’s Vimeo channel and soon also on various study portals.

The many questions that prospective students ask themselves before they apply for an art or design course at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are now answered creatively in an entertaining manner by students of the Media Art and Design programme in so-called explanatory videos.

While various stylistic devices and techniques are used in the animated films, all use stop-motion animation: the series of individual images and photographs used to create the clips were integral to the animation course. The students from Spain, Russia, Latvia and Germany used a variety of different techniques to animate them. Pencils and paper, play dough and string, or photo and newspaper snippets are used in the short films to explain a variety of topics relating to starting a course at the university and life in Weimar in extremely creative ways.

Julia Prokopodis and Wieland Mikolajczyk make cardboard caricatures sweat in front of a friendly admissions committee in their clip on applications and aptitude tests. Their little character provides handy advice to help students remain calm in interview situations: »Breathe in, and out again!« José Vergara provided the music and sounds. He recorded the background music himself on the double bass.

The film »Berufsleben« [»Working life«] by Philipp Kämmerer and Juro Carl Anton Reinhardt with sound by Oliver Friedrich Engel and Stefan Vollmann considers the question of career options after studying Media Art and Design. The students use hand-drawn cartoon characters, cardboard and fabric figures to present a typical WhatsApp conversation with worried parents to point out the many career options open to graduates.

In addition to the explanatory videos, a seventh clip focusing on internationality has also been produced. Ute Heimann animates a multitude of different flags to a groovy beat by Timm Weber.

The helpful and humorous clips were created in the 2018/19 winter semester during two courses: »info.motion.werkstatt« run by Ana Maria Vallejo Cuartas and Catalina Giraldo Velez (Professorship for Multimedia Narration) as well as »Buddy, mach den Beat doller!« run by Mario Weise (Professorship for Experimental Radio). The videos are now available on their own microsite within the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar website, on the study programme subpages, on the university’s Vimeo channel and on various study portals.
