Designing for the Future: Spaces, Resources, Routines – summaery2025 at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism
How can we rethink spaces to make them sustainable for the future? What social and environmental needs must tomorrow’s homes and communal spaces meet? And how can architecture not just reflect change, but also help shape it? From 10 to 13 July, more than 35 projects will show how students from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism tackled these questions. Many projects focus on existing buildings, take a resource-conscious, sensitive approach and often have a strong local or regional focus.
In »Kosmos Hohe Pappeln«, the former home of Henry van de Velde and its surroundings become a real and imagined design space for sustainable building and living. Structural additions, photographic extensions and design visions for a »growing house« that meets today’s requirements of inclusion, sustainability and design diversity are presented.
During the »Bauhäuser« project, students conducted in-depth analyses of the around 60 buildings that the university uses to create a campus guide. The outcome is an artistic architectural guide that tells the university’s story through its buildings. In addition to the exhibition, three themed »Architektouren« architectural tours offer insights into the students’ research.

Berkaer Bahnhof railway station in Weimar served as the experimentation ground for the »Routines« project: students examined the interplay between typologies and everyday routines and developed designs that respond to the changing social and environmental conditions. They explored how the town could be redesigned based on local residents’ daily habits.
The project to revitalise the »Anger« central square in Erfurt addressed current challenges in urban spaces – from structural changes in the retail sector to social participation. In their studies and design ideas, students present new ideas for a more inclusive and vibrant city centre.
At »Dornburg Experimental Farm«, a historical ox barn was transformed under real-life conditions on a 1:1 scale. The aim was to achieve »poetics of sustainable construction« through mindful interventions, a clever choice of materials and a sensitive approach to the existing structure.
Many summaery projects actually extend far beyond the boundaries of Thuringia: design and planning projects in Leipzig, Zwickau, Chemnitz, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Brussels and Paris address a whole array of issues. There are also projects with no fixed location, for example on natural materials such as clay, wood and straw, the reuse of building components and philosophical and artistic approaches.
