Each of the funded projects opens up new perspectives on key social challenges and deals with sustainable living and learning spaces in artistic, creative, scientific, or socially relevant way, actively involving students, researchers, and the community. The funded projects, all of which will be implemented between April 205 and March 2026, range from sustainable urban design to artistic research, experimental science communication, and digital empowerment. All of the projects aim to develop new perspectives on the complex relationships between people and their environments across disciplinary boundaries.
An overview of the funded projects can be found here: https://www.uni-weimar.de/de/universitaet/profil/beyond-now/projekte/
Science, Bitch! – Design for Science Communication
Project Coordinator: Masihne Rasuli | Faculty of Art and Design
The »Science, Bitch!« specialist course offered by the Professorship of Image–Text–Concept teaches students to communicate scientific findings in an understandable and creative way. The goal is to experiment with design as an instrument for contemporary and low-threshold science communication and to develop new communication formats.
»Weimarer Stadtgespräche«: Urban Environments
Project Coordinator: Dr. Elodie Vittu | Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism
The »Weimarer Stadtgespräche« project continues the transdisciplinary discussion series organised by the Institute for European Urban Studies. The discussions address the social design of the urban environment in Weimar together with local citizens and experts from science and the industry. Public events in city spaces encourage participating and contributing ideas.
Inviting Environments – Technology for Supporting Engagement in Urban Communities
Project Coordinator: Margarita Osipova| Faculty of Media
This research project investigates how digital technologies can strengthen the sense of belonging and involvement in local urban communities. Interactive technologies invite citizens to actively shape their surroundings and identify more strongly with their environment.
PostCompost – Forest Reset
Project Coordinator: Christian Doeller | Faculty of Art and Design
The »PostCompost« artistic research project is dedicated to the transformation of destroyed forest landscapes in Thuringia. Students participate in workshops and excursions to reflect on forest damage and artistically explore the potential for new habitats. The results will be used in a large-format, publicly displayed, interactive billboard.
Landscape in the Anthropocene: Thuringian Forest - Between Imagination, Resources, and Reality Project Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Sigrun Langner | Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism
Education projects on the Thuringian Forest as part of the anthropocene come together in an exhibition and discussion format. The aim is to make the diverse, often contradictory relationships between humans and the landscape visible and to draw public awareness to the effects of human activity on the environment.
Print4PR
Project Coordinator: Dr. Fabian Ehle | Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering
The project makes modern construction processes in the field of 3D concrete printing accessible to the public. Courses and other participatory events invite students and the public to learn about the potential and the challenges of this technology and to discuss sustainable construction.
Digital Environments: The Role of Public Service Broadcasting in Transforming Digital Information and Communication Spaces
Project Coordinator: Jr. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Rösch | Faculty of Media
In a cross-faculty and university-wide course, students analyse digital communication spaces that are increasingly affected by fake news and polarisation. Together, they work on developing solutions for trustworthy, inclusive digital spaces. These will be publicly presented at summaery 2025.
Biennial of Care
Project Coordinator: Guliana Marmo | Faculty of Art and Design
The project examines how artistic events can be sustainably designed. A mobile structure collects methods and questions for careful, environmentally conscious, artistic practice. The result is an interactive guide that expands with each event.
Forestmade: Participatory Stewardship for a Sustainable Future
Project Coordinator: Sonia Fiona Fernandes | Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism
»Forestmade« brings students together with local farmers and craftspeople to promote traditional crafts and sustainable production methods, and to generate regional value. The aim is to improve cultural exchange, economic resilience, and environmental awareness through producing and selling local products.
Geo-Somatic Environments: Frantz Fanon’s Film Archives
Project Coordinator: Dr. Elena Vogman | Faculty of Media
This project explores the groundbreaking archival material on Franz Fanon’s psychiatric and media practice. These moving image archives, recently discovered at the Cinémathèque de Bretagne, reveal Fanon's use of art and media in the creation of geo-somatic, therapeutic environments. The two-part interdisciplinary workshop includes a public screening, categorising the research results, and discussing the associated question of the role of film and media in shaping spatial, social, and mental environments.
Four interdisciplinary Bauhaus.Modules are also receiving funding as part of the annual theme programme. An overview can be found at: https://www.uni-weimar.de/de/universitaet/profil/beyond-now/bauhausmodule/
