»Bauhaus Orbits« visualises historic Bauhaus discourses

From 3 to 14 July 2019, students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s MediaArchitecture degree programme will be presenting their work as part of the Bauhaus Orbits installation in the foyer of the University Library, bringing historic Bauhaus discourse to life using contemporary resources.

As part of this artistic and academic project, students categorised and analysed design and teaching concepts from Bauhaus masters such as Walter Gropius, László Moholy-Nagy and Paul Klee. They transformed elements of Bauhaus discourse found in selected historical sources into an algorithmically usable data set and incorporated it into a digital network. This is now depicted across the Bauhaus Orbits installation, whose geometry is inspired by the historic Oberlichtsaal room in the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Main Building.

»With Bauhaus Orbits, we want to provide users with an immersive way to experience historical discourse by using digital media to create a new unity between visual, auditory, tactile and intellectual experience. The students then come up with a form of Bauhaus discourse that is appropriate to the 21st century«, explains Dr. Sabine Zierold, spokesperson for the MediaArchitecture degree programme.
The Bauhaus Orbits project is being supervised and tackled in an interdisciplinary approach by professors, employees and students of the Faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Media, Civil Engineering, and Art and Design.
