Annual conference of the Society for Artistic Research at the Faculty of Art and Design is postponed

The Society for Artistic Research (SAR) conference at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, originally planned for spring 2022, has to be postponed due to the pandemic situation. Participants from all over the world who are dedicated to the field of artistic research in theory and practice will now meet from 30 June to 3 July 2022. This is the first time the format will be hosted in Germany.

Due to the current pandemic situation and the associated travel and meeting restrictions, the conference committee has decided to postpone the 13th SAR International Conference on Artistic Research to the summer of 2022. From the organisers' point of view, this is necessary in order to be able to offer space for an intensive exchange at a high level, a pandemic-proof but at the same time sociable and flexible get-together and focused sessions in physical presence.

The conference aims to bring together the cutting edge of practice-based research in art and design to discuss the latest developments and explore forms of community online and on site, confronting the uncertainties and tensions of our time. The search is on for forward-looking responses to current social, cultural, environmental and economic challenges brought about, for example, by the pandemic situation or climate change.

The 13th edition of the international conference will take place both online and in presence. A 24-hour online format with presentations and lectures is planned, allowing dialogue across all time zones. A three-day meeting in Weimar will offer the opportunity for concentrated sessions, exchange and workshops in presence.

It is no coincidence that the meeting is taking place at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. With its practice-based doctoral programme in »Art and Design«, in which artists and designers can obtain the academic degree »Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)«, the Faculty of Art and Design plays a pioneering role. It offers a double qualification with an equally practical and academic graduation that is unique in Germany. The three-year study programme is completed with a Ph.D. thesis, which consists of an equal weighting of an academic and an artistic or design component.

About SAR:
The Society for Artistic Research was founded in 2010 in Bern, Switzerland, by artists, researchers and academics from around the world. It is the only international society for artistic research in the world. Members of the society include individuals as well as academic and non-academic institutions from around the world. The Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has been a member since 2019 and is organising the 13th annual conference.

Detailed information on the conference content can be found at https://sar2022.uni-weimar.de.
The conference will be held in English.

If you have any questions, please contact Beate Körner and Harriet von Froreich, conference coordinators, by email at sar22[at]uni-weimar.de.
