»Following the footsteps of the early Bauhaus« – student guides have been welcoming visitors to the Bauhaus walk since 2004. The Walks guide visitors through the places where Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and many others lived, worked, taught and came up with their ideas in the era of the Staatliche Bauhaus and student guides bring the past and present of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to life. As Bauhaus Walk coordinator Thomas Apel well knows, there is one thing that sets the Bauhaus Walk apart from conventional tourist offerings: »What has made the Bauhaus Walk special right from the very beginning is the fact that each of the student guides presents the history of Bauhaus and the university in a different way: budding architects, civil engineers, cultural scholars or artists provide visitors with their own particular perspective on the university’s history and what it means to study, learn and also live and celebrate at this special university with its colourful history.« This has been well-received by visitors to the cultural and university city. Over the years the Walk has become a real success story, and interest in it continues to grow, to Apel’s delight.

This is also emphasised by participant Emmi Frank, who came to visit Weimar with her seminar group led by lecturer Regine Heß of TU Munich. She was delighted with the walk, undertaken as part of a visit to Bauhaus sites,  she was familiar with the Bauhaus city from her previous studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. For the long walk, once again available from 22 May 2019, guide Jakob Kröhn led his Munich guests on a two-and-a-half-hour stroll through the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Main Building constructed by Henry van de Velde, with its characteristic foyer, on to the staircases, murals, studios and the Gropius room, and then to the Ilmpark with its Tempelherrenhaus and the Haus Am Horn.

Born of a student initiative, the Bauhaus Walk– part of University Communications – has now grown into an exceptionally successful project and a firm fixture on the Weimar cultural calendar. The guides – budding architects, civil engineers, cultural scholars or artists – provide visitors with their own particular perspective on the university’s history and what it means to study, learn and also live and celebrate at this special university with its colourful history.
