The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Library reopened on Tuesday 21 April for books and DVDs to be borrowed and returned. This service will initially only be available Monday to Friday from 10 am to 2 pm and for Bauhaus-Universität Weimar members only.

»Imitation expressly encouraged!« is the motto guiding the principle of »open design«. To enable people to look after each other as much as possible during the coronavirus crisis, teaching staff in the Product Design and Interface Design departments have developed a special visor. The »BauhausUniVisor« is already being produced in the Bauhaus Form + Function Lab for use by local and regional care facilities and other partners.

Dr. Winfried Speitkamp, President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, has spoken out against the idea of making the 2020 summer semester non-credited (a »non-semester«). Instead, he has encouraged teachers and students to turn their attentions to current social issues and take a creative approach to the crisis.

What happens when you cough? With the help of a so-called Schlieren mirror, researchers in the Building Physics department make visible what is normally hidden from the naked eye: Air currents in a room. The short film impressively shows why we should follow the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations on how to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow have received a total of 715,000 euros of funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Polish research organisation Narodowe Centrum Nauki (NCN) for a joint research project to index and analyse manuscripts and publications by women authors from the period around 1800. The aim is to create a digital platform where scans of manuscripts, transcriptions and contextual materials can be accessed from anywhere in the world free of charge.

What identity-forming potential lies in Vogtland’s cultural heritage? What patterns of perception can be observed? Since February 2020, the »Vogtlandpioniere: Zukunftsindex Heimat und Baukultur 2025« project has seen researchers from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Institute for European Urban Studies examine what people living in the border regions of Bavaria, Saxony, Thuringia and Bohemia consider valuable, what defines quality of life for them, and how they identify the region and understand its future development.

At a meeting on Wednesday 4 March 2020, the University Senate confirmed Dr. Jutta Emes and Dr.-Ing. Christian Koch as Vice Presidents. In doing so, the members of the Senate aligned with the Dr. Winfried Speitkamp’s recommendations.

The Presidium of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has decided to postpone the Open Campus Day that was scheduled to take place on Saturday 7 March 2020.

Dr.-Ing. Lars Abrahamczyk has been leading this newly created professorship at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Faculty of Civil Engineering since 1 January 2020. His research and teaching focus on the analysis, modelling and forecasting of structures, components and systems placed under extreme strain. The aim is to monitor deformability and prevent collapses and relevant damage to complex systems with the help of state-of-the-art technology.

Am Samstag, 7. März 2020, lädt die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zum Hochschulinformationstag »hit« ein. Von 9 bis 15 Uhr beantworten Fachstudienberaterinnen und Fachstudienberater, Lehrende und Studierende im Foyer der Universitätsbibliothek Fragen zu einzelnen Studiengängen, zur Studienorganisation und den sozialen Rahmenbedingungen des Studiums. Außerdem können alle Studieninteressierten sich in Hörsälen, Werkstätten und Laboren vor Ort einen Eindruck vom Studium verschaffen.

Restoring and retrofitting historical buildings in accordance with the regulations for listed buildings poses major challenges for the trades involved – both financially and technically. In future, digital technologies should facilitate the planning and implementation of revitalisation and maintenance measures. The state of Thuringia has awarded the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar around €1.25 million to research new value chains until December 2023.

From 2. August to 28. August 2020, over 300 students and graduates from all over the world will immerse the campus of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in a unique intercultural atmosphere. In the language and specialised courses of the Bauhaus Summer School, they will broaden their professional horizon and get to know the university and the cultural city of Weimar. Registration is open until 1. May 2020.

Bereits zum 19. Mal hat das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie (BMWi) 2020 den bundesweiten Nachwuchswettbewerb »Auf IT gebaut – Bauberufe mit Zukunft« ausgelobt. Zweitplatzierte in der Kategorie »Bauingenieurwesen« ist in diesem Jahr eine Absolventin der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Die Preisverleihung fand im Rahmen der Fachmesse »bautec« am 19. Februar in Berlin statt.

Für das Jahr 2019 kann die Universitätsbibliothek der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar auf ihre ungebrochene Attraktivität verweisen: Mit 201.884 Besucherinnen und Besuchern war sie auch im vergangenen Jahr eine der meistbesuchten Kultur- und Wissenschaftseinrichtungen in Weimar. »Seit 2014«, informiert Bibliotheksdirektor Dr. Frank Simon-Ritz, »liegt die Besucherzahl Jahr für Jahr bei knapp über 200.000. Bei insgesamt 296 Öffnungstagen im Jahr sind das für 2019 im Durchschnitt 682 Besucher pro Tag. Diese Zahl spricht dafür, dass die Bibliothek als Lernort aus dem Alltag unserer Studierenden nicht wegzudenken ist.«

Eine neue Leitlinie zum Umgang mit Forschungsdaten ist am 12. Februar 2020 an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar verabschiedet worden. Mit der Leitlinie will die Universität dazu beitragen, den verantwortungsvollen, transparenten Umgang mit Forschungsdaten voranzubringen.

On 9–10 June, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU) will present selected ideas on the subjects of environmental protection and sustainability in the grounds of Bellevue Palace. Two green innovations from Weimar will be among those presented: the interactive »Phosphorus Bank« (P-Bank) recycling toilet and »LocalHy«, a collaborative project on hydrogen technology.

Seit Anfang Februar 2020 ist die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar mit ihren digitalen Sammlungen im Thüringer Kultur- und Wissensportal »Kulthura« vertreten. Die Digitalisate umfassen insbesondere die Buch- und Zeitschriftenbestände der Vorgängereinrichtungen der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zurückreichend bis ins Jahr 1860.

This year, the »Winterwerkschau« (Faculty of Art and Design) and »go4spring« (Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism) semester shows at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will take place at the same time. On 6–9 February 2020, students will showcase the work they created during the current winter semester.

»IfEU.OPEN« lautet der Titel einer neuen Schriftenreihe des Instituts für Europäische Urbanistik (IfEU) an der Fakultät Architektur und Urbanistik der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Als Open Access-Format stehen die Publikationen mit einer Creative Commons-Lizenz über das Online-Publikationsportal OPUS Weimar der Universitätsbibliothek allen Interessierten kostenfrei zum Herunterladen zur Verfügung.

On 6 January 2020, a three-person project team from the Institute for European Urban Studies (IfEU) at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar began working on the »Urban Co-Production of Social Rights and Public Welfare« research project. Scheduled to run until the end of 2022, the collaborative project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will focus on negotiations between local civil society stakeholders and municipal authorities. It is being conducted in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS) based in Erkner.
