Film music from the »Weimar cinema« era previously believed to have been lost has been rediscovered: the original music to Paul Wegener’s expressionist classic »The Golem: How He Came into the World«. As part of the second Weimar silent film retrospective entitled »Überreizung der Phantasie« (»Overstimulation of the Imagination«), the Professorship for Media Studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is collaborating with the Lichthaus Kino, University Library, Weimar town archive and Kunstfest Weimar to host a »new« premiere at the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar on Thursday, 3 September 2020.

Vom 17. August bis zum 30. Oktober beantworten Studierende der Fakultät Bauingenieurwesen Fragen rund um das Thema Studium und Bewerbung. Auf seiner Sommertour 2020 besucht Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thüringer Minister für Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Digitale Gesellschaft, die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Im Zentrum stehen das Gespräch mit dem Präsidium der Universität über die Ausgestaltung der digitalen Lehre sowie eine Präsentation der Forschergruppe »Die digitale Straße«.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is adding two new contributions to the »New Bauhaus Lectures« (»Neue Bauhausvorträge«) publication series. The lectures by Prof. Dr. Horst Bredekamp and Dr. Christiane Wolf, which were held in the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Main Building on the occasion of the reinstallation of the »Eva« sculpture will be freely accessible online, effective immediately.

Zweimal im Jahr bieten die Studienberaterinnen und -berater der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar die Möglichkeit, sich persönlich über alles Wichtige zum Studium informieren zu lassen: über Studienangebote der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und die Studienorganisation, über Rahmenbedingungen wie Wohn- und Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten sowie die Studienstadt Weimar.

The »Apoll« jury awarded a total of five prizes and two honourable mentions to international students from the faculty of Media Art and Design. Awards were given out to fashion films that were produced for the APOLDA EUROPEAN DESIGN AWARD 2020. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the lavish fashion show could not take place. However, the Fashion Clips are now available to spread the award results throughout the rest of the world.

Masami Saito was the recipient of the »Landesstipendium für Bildende Kunst des Freistaats Thüringen« (Fine Arts State Scholarship) The artist graduated from the Fine Arts programme at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in 2019 under Professor Björn Dahlem and won the jury over with her poetry associated installations.

Maike Alisha Effenberg, Franziska Burkhardt, and Alfredo Ardia were awarded the »Medienkunstpreise« this year. On Saturday 1 August 2020, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students were honoured at an award ceremony at the Galerie Eigenheim in the Weimarhalle for their final theses in Media Art and Design. Three prizes from the Bauhaus Film-Institute were also awarded at the ceremony.

Dr. Legatiuk from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar received the award on 3. August at the »12th International Conference on Clifford Algebras and Their Applications in Mathematical Physics (ICCA)« in Hefei, China, for his outstanding achievements in research on theoretical and applied Clifford analysis. He is the first scientist in the field of applied mathematics to receive this award.

Vom 30. Juli bis 2. August lädt die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar alle Interessierten ein, an der virtuellen Jahresschau »summaery2020 remote« teilzuhaben. Eröffnet wird das Online-Event am Donnerstag um 17 Uhr per Livestream aus dem Foyer der Universitätsbibliothek. Unter dem Motto »Let’s talk about summaery« erwartet die Zuschauenden ein zweistündiges Programm mit Talkgästen aus der Universität, Live-Schalten zu einzelnen Projekten und Live-Musik von der Weimarer Band iULL.

Unter besonderen Bedingungen und mit vielen neuen Perspektiven – vom 30. Juli bis 2. August findet in diesem Jahr die »summaery2020 remote« der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar statt. Der Zusatz »remote« (deutsch: entfernt) weist darauf hin: Die Orte der Jahresschau – sonst über den gesamten Stadtraum Weimars verteilt – werden bis auf wenige Ausnahmen ins Virtuelle verlegt. Ob von der heimischen Wohnzimmercouch, aus dem eigenen Garten oder vom Urlaubsort aus – verfolgt werden kann die gesamte Schau überall dort, wo es einen Rechner, ein Smartphone oder Tablet sowie eine Internetverbindung gibt.

The »Beteiligung in der Denkmalpflege« (Participation in Heritage Conservation) pilot project is being launched by the city of Erfurt's Denkmalbehörde (Department of Heritage Conservation) in August and September 2020, assisted by the Conservation and History of Architecture department in the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Studies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The Denkmalbehörde involves citizens and members of the public who are interested in conservation issues.

Several events have been cancelled since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, at the end of July, the large hall in the Congress Centrum Weimarhalle was full again: hundreds of students wrote their examinations under strict hygiene and social distancing regulations. Thus, the first digital summer semester ended in a partially conventional way: using paper and pen.

The successful Weimar Silent Film Retrospective »Schock der Freiheit« (The Shock of Freedom) will be entering its second round at the Kunstfest Weimar (Weimar Arts Festival) from 2. to 10. September 2020. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Weimar City Archive, Lichthaus Cinema and Kunstfest Weimar will be reviewing the Weimar cinematic year of 1920 under the title »Überreizung der Phantasie«.

ShiftFM, the interdisciplinary radio project for the 2020 summer semester is going on air for one week. The programme will be streamed on www.bauhaus.fm and temporarily on Radio Lotte Weimar from 7 pm on Monday 6. July to 11 pm on Monday 13. July.

Am 4. Mai 2020 startete an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar aufgrund der Coronavirus-Prävention das erste digitale Semester. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit wurden kreative Lösungen für ortsunabhängiges Arbeiten (»remote work«) gesucht, erprobt, verworfen und verbessert. Ein kontinuierlicher Prozess, der an den Fakultäten Architektur und Urbanistik, Bauingenieurwesen, Medien sowie Kunst und Gestaltung in außergewöhnlichen Schaffensprozessen und zahlreichen Projekten mündete.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has awarded the Bauhaus Guest Professorship for a third time: for the upcoming winter semester, Dr. Mirjam Wenzel, Director of the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, will take over the Bauhaus Guest Professorship position.

Aufgrund der sich ausbreitenden Pandemie musste der diesjährige Hochschulinformationstag »hit« im März verschoben werden. Dieser wird nun digital nachgeholt: Am Samstag, 4. Juli 2020, können von 10 bis 15 Uhr die verschiedenen Bachelor- und Master-Studiengänge direkt von zuhause aus erkundet werden.

Johannes Kiesel, a Bauhaus-Universität Weimar scientist from the Webis Group (Web Technology and Information Systems), has won the »FAIRest Dataset« award. Kiesel’s submission was selected as the dataset that best met the FAIR principles: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

From the 2020/2021 winter semester onwards, prospective students will be able study the new »Informatics« Bachelor's degree programme in Weimar with »Medieninformatik« (Computer Science and Media) or »Security and Data Science« as a specialisation. The subject of Computer Science and Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is becoming increasingly aligned with the current needs of the labour market, and is training future specialists in highly sought-after fields.
