With the Prospect of a Tenured Professorship - The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Welcomes Eight New Tenure Track Professors in 2022

Starting in 2022, eight new tenure track professors (two in each of the four faculties) will be teaching and carrying out research at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. This will give the university the chance to recruit outstanding young researchers and artists and to offer them long-term career prospects in Weimar. The positions are funded by the »Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses«, through which the university was able to successfully recruit the eight junior professors.

Three of the tenure track positions will be appointed in the first quarter of 2022; the other five will follow in time for the 2022/2023 winter semester. Dr. Dorothee Rummel, junior professor of »Stadt Raum Entwerfen«, joined the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism on 6 January 2022. Dr. Sabine Wirth, junior professor of »Digitale Kulturen/Digital Cultures«, and Dr. Jürgen Rösch, junior professor of »Digitale Ökonomien/Digital Economies«, will be joining the Faculty of Media in the 2022 summer semester. The rest of the junior professors are set to fill posts in  »Bauentwurfslehre« (Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism), »Tragwerkssicherheit« and »Werkstoffmechanik« (Faculty of Civil Engineering), as well as »Emerging Technologies and Design« and »Akustische Ökologien und Sound Studies« (Faculty of Art and Design) for the 2022/2023 winter semester.

The newly-appointed academics and artists undergo a two-stage evaluation as part of their tenure track professorship position. Upon a successful evaluation, they will be promoted to a W3 tenured professorship position without a call for new applications. Until the end of the tenure, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers women in its tenure track programme targeted support for their further qualification through the newly developed BauhausTrack programme, which includes workshops, counselling and mentoring.

By participating in the federal and state tenure track programme, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is making significant strides in promoting young academics. This will be achieved, on the one hand, through sustainably establishing an appealing, strategic and transparent career path and, on the other hand, through the promotion and qualifying of young academics and artists.

Background
In 2016, the federal government and the state governments established the »Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses«. The key aim of the programme is to strengthen the tenure track professorship model. The programme offers an immediate promotion to a tenured professorship position following a successful probationary period. The federal government is providing up to one billion euros to finance 1,000 new tenure track professorship positions. The respective state governments for the funded universities provide the overall funding, which will allow for the tenure track professorship positions achieved with this programme to be maintained after the programme ends. 75 universities with a total of 1,000 professorship positions (eight of which are at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) will benefit from this programme.
