15th International Bauhaus-Colloquium Published Programme – Interdisciplinary Conference to Discuss Political Conditions of Knowledge Production

Research is considered the foundation of knowledge: But how is research defined today, and what does it mean? Who decides which questions are asked, which methods are recognised, and which topics receive funding? And how are technological infrastructures, artificial intelligence, and social conflicts influencing research? These are the questions that the 15th International Bauhaus-Colloquium will be focussing on from 4 to 7 November 2026 at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Under the title »Politics of Research«, the conference, which will be held in English, will bring together nearly 130 international researchers from the fields of architecture and urban planning, art and design, and media and cultural studies to discuss the political, institutional, and societal conditions of research. The Conference programme is now available online and registration is now open.

The colloquium will feature four parallel panels over four days, featuring presentations, discussions, and performances. Artistic works and participatory workshops present alternative paths to understanding. New perspectives on architecture, media, technology, and the political dimensions of the production of space and knowledge will be opened up through keynote speeches by Samia Henni and Matteo Pasquinelli, as well as a film presentation and discussion with Hito Steyerl and Oleksiy Radynski.

The Conference also picks up on the site’s unique history: The International Bauhaus-Colloquium in Weimar is itself a historical example of »Politics of Research«. When the Conference series began in 1976, its goal was to establish academic research on the Bauhaus in the GDR and to establish an international network – a challenging task within the centrally controlled academic landscape of the GDR. After all, following years of political rejection, the Bauhaus had to be reestablished as an important topic in architecture and urban planning. Fifty years later, the Colloquium is revisiting this history and again examining the prerequisites and societal impacts of research.

By doing this, the fifteenth edition of the Colloquium is broadening its focus on architectural theory and history. Architecture is understood as part of an expanded field of research, which is inextricably linked to art, media, technology, and society. By examining the historical Bauhaus, the Conference is bringing together theoretical, design-oriented, and empirical approaches to discuss current issues in knowledge production from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The 15th International Bauhaus-Colloquium is funded by the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the Ernst-Abbe-Stiftung, and the Wüstenrot Stiftung. The programme is now available online and offers information on the thematic scope of the Conference. With the release of the programme, registration for the International Bauhaus-Colloquium also begins.
