Haunted Apartment Block: Freie Kunst Students Explore Traces of Life in the »Blumenblock« at the 2026 Landesgartenschau
What happens when art moves into empty prefabricated flats and uncovers traces of the past? Freie Kunst students at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are participating in the »Spuk im Hochhaus« exhibition for the Landesgartenschau in Leinefelde-Worbis. On the third floor of the »Blumenblock«, the students are investigating traces left behind by former residents and exploring questions of how people lived, remembrance, and coexistence. The exhibition will be on display for the duration of the Landesgartenschau, from Thursday 23 April to Sunday 11 October 2026.
Ten Freie Kunst students are moving into the »Blumenblock« in Leinefelde-Worbis as part of the Landesgartenschau 2026. They will be exploring the traces left behind by former residents of the 1980s prefabricated apartment block.
The apartments still bear the traces of past lives. The tell the stories of communal living and the prefabricated apartment block (»Plattenbau«), of closeness and seclusion, of everyday life and neighbourhood. The artistic works pick up these traces and ask how they have been inscribed with ideas of community and living. The also look at how things have changed: What remains visible and what disappears when ways of living change? What aspects of communal living shapes these spaces today? How will they shape them in the future?
A mixed-media installation by Calum Mac Dubberke playfully looks at the issue of sound transmission in prefabricated apartment blocks. An empty bed bangs repeatedly against a wall while a telescopic camera shows the inner workings of the artist’s ear. The work highlights how close people get to one another in prefabricated apartment blocks, even in situations where privacy and intimacy are sought. Sina Robering has created a sculpture out of items left behind by former residents. She came across layers of wallpaper, posters, and even mould on the walls in the flats. Inspired by its form and spread, she has created a large-scale installation.
The project is supervised by artistic staff member Florian Hesselbarth, Professorship of »Kunst und sozialer Raum«, and Karla Zipfel, Professorship of Skulptur, Objekt, Installation«.
