Honourable Mentions at proHolz Student Trophy 2026 for Architecture Master’s Students
Master's students Gord von Campe, Johannes Damm and Franka Frye from the Master's degree programme in Architecture at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar received an honourable mention at this year’s proHolz Student Trophy 2026 for their collaborative project »Tectum Wien. Wohnen_Lernen«.
The design focuses on the addition of extra storeys to a listed Viennese social housing block built in the early 20th century by architect Jože Plečnik. The extension is intended to provide extra capacity to accommodate unhoused people and support their integration. The project aims to also carefully develop the existing structure, paying particular attention to social, spatial, and structural qualities.
The project’s thoughtful approach to the architectural and structural exploration of timber as a building material and to the existing building itself impressed the jury.
The staggered layout of the new stairwells ensures that the extension clearly stands out from the rest of the building as well as the neighbouring buildings. Private terraces on the side street provide a place of retreat while the courtyard side offers a spacious roof garden for residents. The new construction uses a compartmentalised structure and creates a variety of communal living spaces using maisonette layouts. The new design blends smoothly and naturally into the existing streetscape.
The project was supervised by Prof. Daniela Spiegel and Christine Dörner from the Professorship of Conservation and History of Architecture, Luise Nerlich from the Professorship of Building Design Theory), and Henrik Hinterbrandner from the Professorship of Construction Materials.
The proHolz Student Trophy is awarded every two years by proHolz Austria. The sixth iteration of the competition was held with the theme »Timber on Top – Aufstockung im urbanen Bestand«. A total of 119 projects from eight countries were submitted. In addition to the three award-winning projects, the expert jury also presented honourable mentions to five other submissions.
