10 m² City: Sustainable Temporary Pavilion on University Campus

On a car park in the southern part of the university campus, students of Architecture and Urbanism teamed up with lecturers from the Design and Urban Design professorship to create an experimental timber construction. The installation can be visited and is also being used for small events until the end of October.

In a two-week workshop, 17 students from the Architecture and Urbanism Bachelor’s and Master’s study programmes designed and constructed a pilot space for alternative campus usage. By upcycling timber and canvas, a sustainable meeting place was created: removable as well as reusable and – through the use of solar modules – self-sufficient in energy supply. This pavilion, known as »Parklet«, covers an area of ten square meters and as such fits exactly onto a single parking space, thereby using the otherwise redundant space effectively – as an outdoor workspace, a campus lounge or simply somewhere to sit during a break.

Pola Koch, a research assistant from the Design and Urban Design professorship, describes the project idea as follows: »A Parklet is a temporary installation, which is positioned on a car park in order to use the area as recreational or experimental space for people instead of as a place to park a car. In developing their plans, the students provided for the later removal as well as for the construction of the Parklet. Integration of the solar module as part of the design visualises the gradual merging of energy generation and architecture. All in all, the project is an exercise in sustainable construction, which combines sustainable building materials with state-of-the-art technology.«

The installation is to remain in place until the end of October and will later be evaluated. A variety of events will be taking place there during the next weeks, including micro lectures, a film presentation and mini workshop. You are warmly invited to attend these events. Up-to-date information concerning the programme will soon be available at: https://www.uni-weimar.de/de/architektur-und-urbanistik/professuren/staedtebau-1/

The project was supervised by Pola Koch and Stefan Signer (Professorship of Design and Urban Design) in collaboration with Christian Hanke and Ringo Gunkel (Experimental Workshops on Architecture at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) and Japanese architect Hiroshi Kato. The Solarwatt-Group supported the project with technical know-how and additionally sponsored a stand-alone photovoltaic system.
