Insurance

Insurance

Health insurance is compulsory in most countries, however please note that the regulations vary. Request comprehensive information from your health insurance company on your current insurance coverage and whether you need to take out complementary cover. If necessary, obtain written confirmation of this complementary cover for your extended stay abroad.

Please note:

  • International travel insurance is not sufficient if you will be studying abroad. This is essentially just a supplement to your existing insurance – to cover the cost of return transport to Germany, for example.
  • You must obtain confirmation in your host country that your health insurance coverage is sufficient (e.g. from the statutory health insurance company). Different regulations apply in each country. Therefore, be sure to ask the responsible office at your host university for details (International Office, ERASMUS office, etc.).
  • For countries in Eastern Europe and Asia, you will need to obtain additional cover to complement your statutory health insurance or to take out private health insurance. Please also note the entry regulations for your chosen country (e.g. in 1996, insurance coverage of $50,000 per accident or illness was required to enter the USA). Expect to have to pay around €50 per month for coverage. Further information is available from the International Office.
  • Students enrolled at a British university are able to use the National Health Service (NHS) – this also applies for international students if they intend to study in the UK for more than six months. For more information, contact the responsible office at your host university.
  • In France, German students can take out complementary health insurance known as “mutuelle” to help cover health expenses.
  • Private health insurance is often valid worldwide. You will need to contact the insurance companies directly or an insurance broker for information.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

The general statutory health insurance provides coverage in all EU countries. You will need the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for this.

Accident and liability insurance

If you are planning an extended stay abroad, then you may want to consider taking out additional accident and liability insurance. The DAAD offers affordable insurance.
