Prof. Dr. Frank Hartmann

Professor Hartmann, passed away on Saturday July 27.

As chair for History and Theory of Visual Communication at the Bauhaus Universität Weimar, Frank Hartmann played a decisive role in shaping the academic approach toward visual culture in its entirety of forms and practices across times and cultures. As a media philosopher, he made key contributions to media and communication studies in outlining a material-oriented and historically informed analysis of media phenomena. In his ten years at the Bauhaus Universität Weimar, Frank Hartmann has provided essential impulses for a scientifically rigorous and problem-oriented design education at the Faculty of Art and Design. The faculty has lost a highly esteemed academic, mentor and colleague.
